History of Art interview at Leeds anyone?

I've applied for history of art and Leeds sent me a letter the other day saying they want to invite me up for a group interview (bit weird seeing as it's history of art and they don't normally do interviews) anyone else been invited/know what it's going to be like?

cheers

I didn't apply to Leeds but was interviewed for HOA at York and Oxford.

A group interview sounds more like an attempt to get you to visit the place and increase your commitment. Many unis/departments use interviews which may sound and feel like selection techniques but are actually a means of recruiting.

I wouldn't stress about it. Just have an answer to the obvious "why do you want to study history of art" question and maybe some examples to hand of exhibitions/museums/architecture you've seen first hand and what you found interesting about them.

Incidentally, I was also invited to Essex for a HOA interview. I emailed them explaining that I wouldn't be attending as I had offers from unis which I preferred and wanted to withdraw. They promptly rejected me on UCAS!

good luck
I also have an interview for History Of Art at Leeds. Mines on Wednesday 28th January. When is Yours?
I had my interview last year, and I don't think I have ever been so scared about anything in my life !!

It really was not to bad. There were about 10 other girls in my interview group and the lady that interviewed us was lovely and made me feel really at ease. She just asked us why we wanted to do history of art at Leeds and then we had to answer in tern. She also questioned you about your personal statement so make sure you know what you put!! But I've heard that other people were asked different questions but all centering around history of art at Leeds, so pretty straight forward. I would reccomend swatting up on Gombrich's Story of art, as that's the text that the course follows. Just be yourself and speak clearly and confidently.

I really didn't think I would get in as I have never done History of Art before and really didn't know a lot apart from I really really really wanted to go to leeds! and the other people in my interview group were all super duper history of art geeks, which was fairly intimidating. But I'm here now and love it so GOOD LUCK!

Swotting up on Gombrich is a good piece of advice. I'd never heard of him 'till my first lecture and he's what the whole first semester/year is based on!

If you'd like any advice on the Leeds history of art dept just ask

Hello,

I have got my interview on the 15th of Dec - NEXT TUESDAY :O

Ohh I am glad to hear that because I have read that book! Took me ages, but I can talk about it, I also mentioned it in my Personal Statement.

I was just wondering if any of you know how many applicants they accept? Is it a big department or not? And any other interview tips?

Thanks

There must be around 150 history of art students per year? Give or take a bit, of course. I'm not sure if that includes cultural studies either (I'm just guessing from lectures I've been in). Sorry, I can't give a great idea but it must be over 100.

Just be confident and show interest in the subject academically (as opposed to 'I want to look at pretty pictures for my degree') and I'm sure you'll do fine

Best of luck

Just received mine through the post- 14th December. Pretty nervous, but at the same time quite excited! I don't think mine's a group interview though... Anyone else going on the 14th?

I have this interview too! Is it for the History of Art and Museum Studies course, as I have one for the History of Art course on the 15th as well?

So nervous and no idea what to expect!

I'm really worried that I'm going to get a group interview after reading this thread! My letter just said an "informal interview" so I'm hoping that means one to one! Have you studied History of Art at A level?

Yeah mine's informal as well! I wouldn't worry though, I'm sure people are in the same position. But the problem with group interviews is that there's always a pretentious one. I'm just going to briefly go over the art movements and learn two new pieces of art I haven't really looked at. And I haven't nooo, I do history and art though. Do you>
what kind of offers did you get for History of Art at Leeds?

I applied for both of the History of Art courses at Leeds and have received conditional offers from both.

History of Art with Museum Studies: BBB
History of Art: I presume that it's going to be ABB. I had a letter through the post before Christmas to say that they were making me an offer but it hasn;t gone through on UCAS yet so I can't say for sure!

Have you applied for Leeds? x
