group 7 elements

hi

could someone please explain why group 7 elements become less reactive as u go down group

I have been told it is because it is harder to gain an electron because outer shell is further from nucleus however I don't really understand that.

also please could u explain why boilng point increases as u go down group 7

thanks

Group 7 elements have 7 electrons in their outer shell....however as you go down the group (due to the periods) there are more shells....this means that the attractive force from the positive nucleus is weaker due to the fact that the outer shell is further away.....you have to remember that electrons are negative and are attracted to the positive central nucleus.....so, as you go down the group there is a further distance between the outer shell and and the nucleus ergo making it harder to gain an electron..... thus making it less reactive

thanks that was really helpful. why would the boiling point increase?

thanks that was really helpful. why would the boiling point increase?

The molecules are held together by London Bonding Forces, and these increase with relative mass.

again, because there are more shells with more electrons there are more bonds so more energy is required to break the bonds.... and for the state to change
