its turning black up the side and yes i can feel some slight pain.

what happens when dentists do a cap, is it expensive for a white one?

im really scared. i dont want to lose any teeth

See your dentist.

You could either get a cap, or a veneer which is basically a new (fake) tooth which would match your other teeth.

go to the dentist asap, this happened to my friend and she didn't go and she was in a lot of pain because of it and her face was very swollen. It's really important that you do see a dentist who can check on it and advise treatment so that you don't lose any teeth! No-one can give you an answer on here really.....

Go to the dentist, make it a little casket and have some mini trumpets for a fanfare and a proper sending off...

(ps brush your teeth!)

Holy hell. Better to have a gap than a black tooth!

Urm... teeth aren't alive in the first place, they're just bones.

Part of the tooth must be alive, or the root must be at least surely? I thought the dentine needed a blood supply :dontknow:

Actually, come to think of it, I'm talking crap. *shuts up*

All bones consist of living cells embedded in the mineralized organic matrix that makes up the osseous tissue.

Why be anonymous when you've come bearing wisdom?

My friend's tooth effectively "died" and slowly started turning brown. She saw a dentist and the dentist made it magically turn white again*. Now you can't tell it apart from any of her other teeth. So yep, just pop along to your dentist.

*not a medical term.

please keep anon

its near the front so dont want it taking out, what would my dentist do.

thanks.

That's not a lot of info to go on, it could just be a cavity.
Whoever said it could be capped is wrong... no matter how a tooth gets black dentists can polish the tooth back to the way it was before.
You will only be able to tell if the tooth has died when you have an Xray at the dentists - don't worry sometimes teeth just become darker because of plaque build up - best to get it checked. This means nothing really.

You are more likely to have a dead tooth if it has an absess (lump at gum/lots pain) or you've had a filling that has cracked slightly - unnoticed.
But either problem of these of the tooth then you need a root canal

I think it sounds like you need to go and see your Dentist as soon as possible. The longer you leave it, the longer you will be in pain and the less effective your treatment will be. (So basically its not worth the risk).
It could be many things to be honest, but if your tooth really has died then they will have to give you a root canal I think. It can be quite painful but it should prevent your tooth causing you any more discomfort. After treatment you can usually get your tooth sorted so its colour does not get any worse, and there are probably treatments to restore it to previous colour too.

The main thing is not to panic, but act as quickly as you can!
