    Why would you think that universities are more keen on state and grammar school students?

    No. They will probably take into account your educational background when looking at your grades but they will not actively prefer a state educated student over a privately educated one.

    Its 'grammar' by the way.

    when i was applying edinburgh the admissions people openly said they prefer state school to private school pupils

    What effect would their not being allowed to actually have, though? It's not as if the selection process for university applicants is well-known for its transparency...
