I started uni last month and I'm living in the equivalent of halls of residence, a short distance from campus. I'm aware that next year we have to move out and find our own accommodation, so I'd like to know about some peoples experiences!

Do you get to choose who you live with?
How many of there were you?
How do prices and fees compare to halls?
    and
How does private accommodation compare to halls of residence in general?

    Thanks in advance!

    Yes.

I'm living with 3 other people, 4 - 6 seems to be the average group size in Durham. If you're a very big group or an awkward number (like 7), you'll have a much more limited choice of houses.

For me, it's cheaper to live out of university accommodation than in, but it's impossible to answer this properly because it depends on how much you're prepared to pay in rent, and how frugal you are with bills. It'll cost you more to live close to campus in a lovely house than it will further away in a slightly grotty one

I much prefer the feeling of having a house with a living room. I'd forgotten how much I missed having a sofa!

However, when you live in halls it's an awful lot more convenient. We've had a lot of problems with our house and a pretty incompetent land lady (we still don't have a working oven after 2 months, for example).
