Hi, Im an international student with offers for Mech Eng(MEng) from UoSouthampton and UoNottingham. Im interested in becoming a motorsport engineer (eventually F1) and also wanna be an entrepreneur.

Which uni is better for my course (based purely on academics and facilities like labs, etc)??
Soton is higher up in the rankings while Nottingham has better employer relations (according to qs). Theyre just so closely matched in the numbers game its hard to differentiate. Pls help (Id love to hear your reasons) Thanks!!

I wouldn’t know the precise differences between the two. Best to compare the modules on side by side basis. Also graduate statistics for the course.

As for getting into F1, it wouldn’t really make any difference which one you attended as it is more about you.

Southampton does have a good reputation for Mech Eng. Nottingham isn’t too shabby as well.

do you think it would be better to take an integrated masters from one of these unis or take a
bachelors from another uni ranked higher up

I know people in F1 industry from both universities; honestly don’t think it’ll make a big deal of difference, but you’ll have to grind out experience in either.

It really depends what you want to do in F1, some areas your going to need specialist expertise…

Both will have fully equipped labs, they are both heavy on engineering research so facilities won’t be an issue.
As for eventually f1, most people in F1 start at entry level within the sport with possible exceptions being CFD & certain roles in propulsion where you need more intensive specialty (normally MSc or PhD or grad job).

nobody cares what QS ranking says.

go to the city you prefer.

Hey,

I am a current 3rd year student at Nottingham.
Although I don't personally study Mech Eng a few of my friends do and one has just secured a placement at a car manufacturer for F1 as he is also really interested in that area.

If you have any questions about the uni or city let me know as I think both unis are a really good choice. It is important that you enjoy where you are staying as well as the course.

Hope this helps,
Emily

You could have gone for Motorsport Engineering at Oxford Brookes - this course is the best to get into F1. All the teams have Brookes grads in them.

Personally I don’t think it would make any difference.

Go for Integrated Masters if you can as helps with CEng.
