I was wondering whether I could still apply to top universities during clearing for economics. Most of these universities however require maths for it. Though during clearing, is it really necessary to have a maths a level? I'm currently studying economics at a level with a predicted A*.

Yes it is. It is a required subject, they don't ask it just for fun.

Plus, A level economics is almost nothing like degree level.

No top Unis will be in Clearing for Economics, but even if they were, they will still want A level Maths.

You need matha A level for most Economics courses but seek out the BA in Economics where A level maths is not always required e.g. Manchester Uni

Most top universities require A level Maths as Economics is basically Maths. It wont change at any time and there wont be any top universities in clearing. If you check ucas course search and filter to show only courses that are available you will see which universities currently have vacancies. If anything the number of universities in clearing will be fewer as places get filled.

Here is a list I did a couple of years ago of universities who dont require A levels.

Economics without A level Maths

Aberystwyth grade 4
Aston grade 5
Bangor grade 4
East Anglia grade 5
Essex grade 5
Hull grade 4
Kent grade 6
Lancaster grade 6
Leicester grade 5
Loughborough grade 6/7
Queens Belfast grade A
Reading grade 6
Royal Holloway grade 7
Stirling grade 4
Srathclyde grade 6
Surrey grade 7
Sussex grade 6
Swansea grade 5
