I'm pretty interested in MA in Anthropology, but my undergraduate background is Japanese Studies, does this affect my application?

Hello,
I know it's been a while since you posted this question, but I just thought I would reply incase it's still helpful.

You can apply to the MA in Social Anthropology without a background in Anthropology. In fact you might find your Background in Japanese studies quite helpful. I think in terms of the application process I would advise you link your background to your current interest in Anthropology and this course specifically in your personal statement.

The course is designed both for students who are continuing their studies in Anthropology but also for those who are new to the discipline. Also, you can check out SOAS's On demand open day which also has taster lectures for the Anthropology course. It might help give you an idea of what the course is like.

letter of expected graduation/when will I receive my degree certificate?

hello! im currently in my final year at soas and i am applying for a job but I need my degree certificate latest by end of july/august, i was wondering if this is possible? when do we normally receive our physical certificates?

also I need a letter of expected graduation before this, how would i get this letter? is it possible to get this letter before the end of june?

if im not able to receive my actual degree certificate before i leave for the job (as its in another country, depending on whether i get accepted with the letter of expected graduation) will i be able to request it be shipped abroad, of course paying fees if necessary?

thank you

I'm looking at my timetable - is there really only 2 contact hours per week? I was told there would be 10 at the open day. This is for SSAH foundation year.

Hey there,

No, you should have a number of lectures and tutorials per week. You should have around 4 modules per semester for your course. Generally there would be a lecture and tutorial for all. So, yes that would roughly be over 10 hours.

The reason your timetable only showed one class was because your timetable wasn't updated - you should be able to see your full timetable now.

Hello Marjaan, I am a undergraduate freshman at SOAS, I understand that there are some missing fields on my timetable (lectures has been added but no seminars at all), should I visit the office of my home major for help? Or else where should I go for assistance?

Besides, is it normal to have merely 8 hours a week including all lectures and tutorials?

I have missed the welcome week and I am a bit stressed now, thank you for your kind reply in advance!!

Hi,

You can speak to your year convenor if you are worried. You may find a recording of the introduction talk on the Moodle page for your course but all introductory lectures for all your modules will give introductions anyway.

In terms of hours, it depends on what year you are in and what course you are doing. For LLB Students in their second year, for example, you won't necessarily have a tutorial every week for each module but you do for most weeks for first year.

Generally speaking, you will have a tutorial for each lecture. But you will get the exact details for this on your Moodle page. The Moodle pages contain all the information about your courses and will outline what lectures and tutorials you have and when. The Moodle page is the finalised version of your timetable, but hopefully timetables for tutorials will be finalised this week.

I hope this helps. If you have any issues please go to the support team for your department. Here is the link for Department Contacts (you can find their office numbers and emails here).
