sure, so is genetic diversity simply the number of different alleles of a specific gene, or does it refer to the number of different alleles of all genes in a population?

When you say 'all genes' do you mean that the allele can come from any gene in a population?
If so, then I'm pretty sure genetic diversity refers to the frequency of different alleles from all genes.

From my previous experience, genetic diversity is usually referring to the variety of inherited traits within a population. If you're referring to specific genes, as in your first point, the number of distinct alleles in a population for a specific gene is known as "Allelic Richness".

the genetic diversity is the variety of alleles in a gene pool.. meaning it doesn't refer to a particular gene, but all the alleles for each gene in the genome..
