What’s a ‘professional’ job?

Professional qualifications are vocational courses that train you on a specific career path or industry such as medicine, law, accounting, psychology conversion or construction management etc. They are accredited by professional bodies that set the exams and regulate the standards you must meet to work in certain jobs. So not anybody can do the job for you hence good in salary. Google Professional qualifications on Prospects and see what you require for each sector. More importantly, search how much you can earn if you achieved a certain professional qualification on each position.

Hi,

I’m graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology this July. I’ve been searching for jobs that are relevant to my field. But I’m honestly feeling that I don’t deserve my degree or deserve to be in the field, if that makes sense. I can’t seem to find any job roles that are relevant and the ones that I applied for, I didn’t get or didn’t hear back from. Is anyone in a similar position to me or has been in the same position? I’m starting a job at a nursery soon, just so I have a job and an income. But it’s not what I want to do permanently. I’m living with my boyfriend now, and I just feel like I should be making a lot more money as I have a degree behind me. I think I’m just feeling a sense of imposter syndrome at the moment… Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance 😊

Hi there! I just graduated with a BSc in Criminology and Social Policy a couple of weeks ago! Have you looked at becoming a court usher? I volunteered as one during my time at uni for my local coroner's court, and I loved it! Although I volunteered, most of these positions are typically paid roles. One of my friends on my course is also currently volunteering with a local prison, so that might be worth looking into! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about it!

Thank you! I hadn’t thought about that actually. Is that what you’re going to be doing?

A masters in criminology would open a lot of doors for you. I'm in my final year of crim and have been advised that a masters is needed to get a good role in my choice of career. The thing is having a degree is not the same as it was in the past. Lots more people get degrees these days and also criminology at undergraduate teaches small amounts of lots of subject matter within crim, psychology, sociology and law so a chosen field at masters is needed to be considered an expert. Sorry you're feeling you don't deserve it but I'm sure that's wrong, you got your degree so I'm sure a masters is possible. I hope this helps.
