Hey guys,

Just as a guide, could some of those who were accepted post their qualifications/experience for the information of those planning on applying next year?
This would be great

Thanks

Respy

Are you interested in any particular specialism?

Well, for Clinical Engineering I had BEng Medical Engineering, one year industrial placement in medical device company and currently doing MSc in Biomedical Engineering.

But once again I'd like to stress that in my opinion it's not about qualifications (well, of course you need to have some qualifications, and for some specialisms like life sciences they may be more critical) - it's all about showing how you meet the core competencies and demonstrating your passion.

Thanks Queen Ali!

From now til Feb 2012 I am going to contacting immunology labs; were you successful in the interviewing process?

I was thinking about taking a year out to do a placement but I've thought about it and the best thing I think is to apply for the STP this year and if I don't get onto the scheme then I can find a placement and hopefully it'll better my chances when applying the second time round!

What kind of questions did they ask you in your interview, problem solving/ data-interp type questions? Or was it mostly a discussion on your experience and knowledge?

Thanks for the good luck

I think an added bonus with clinical experience is that you can decide if you actually enjoy working in a clinical laboratory, as it does not live up to some people's expectations.

I'm still waiting to hear back from my interview, but I have not been rejected or reserve-listed yet.... no news is good news in this waiting game.

As for the interview questions, I don't think that people are really discussing them on the forum, but my interview did not have problem/solving or data interpretation, it was just a mixture of discussing your experience, what makes a good clinical scientist, and some subject specific questions.

Hope that helps

I'm still in a waiting game but hopefully it is because I am being offered something..
..

I applied for the Haematology STP in the Life Sciences.

I'm completing a Biomedical Sciences degree which included a 1 year placement in a hospital Haematology laboratory. I have continued to work at the hospital at weekends during my final year. I am on course for getting a 1:1, if I can manage to revise whilst waiting for result!

Could be wrong but my guess is that you are lying. You wouldn't know what others said at interview and the reserves come in after the interview not before

Hmmmmm

The feedback came from one of the laboratories I applied for. I sent an e-mail asking for feedback on my application and was told that they only read the applications using the criteria I gave up there. I shared it because I didn't realise people would accuse me of lying, I thought it would be helpful.

My knowledge of what happens at the interviews came from sitting in meetings at work where they were discussed. Plus, people talk. Again, I don't know as much as people that were there but I know a bit about what the laboratories are saying about the scheme. Or at least the ones I've worked in.

As for the reserves? Each centre gave a shortlist of 4 and a reserve list of 10 applicants. I'm sure that is in the MSC published documents.

But honestly, think what you like. I know you're wrong.

It's all a bit quiet on here this morning, so I thought I would break the silence...

I got an offer of Haematology at Barts and the London! Finally!

I had to build myself up to opening the email... Only to find that you then have to open a pdf to get the result!

I just assumed Barts as Oxford got back to me with a no before interviews through the NHS jobs site. But I'm not really sure if thats the case as I heard that we might still be considered at the Oxford Trust

Have you received an offer for Bart's and the London as well Seahawk_09?

Yeh I've just got my email through now! So once we have accepted, do we just wait for confirmation from the trust after the references and the various checks??

I think that sounds about right. I just have to decide if I want to move to London or not. I have job opportunities in Bristol as well. I'm leaning towards accepting, and getting a fresh start in London town!
Has anyone had their checks done? I'm waiting for the trust to contact me

Congrats! So pleased for you, you must be so relieved. Be sure to post a note just to say how you're finding the training programme if you do decide to take the Barts and London offer.

Best of luck and thanks for your advice.

I have a BEng in Engineering, 10+ years of work experience (but none in NHS and Medical Physics), and currently doing a MSc in Medical Physics. Qualifications and experience (and how you write them up) seem get you to the interview, then at the interview its all about making sure you get your message across. Experience (especially when relevant) helps as it gives you the opportunity to talk about examples of when you have done things like lead a team, manage a project or your work. But unless you can express those examples well, all the experience in the world won't get you an offer.

Edit: My personal statement was also quite short, 2/3 side of A4. Other people wrote double or triple that. Go through the job and person specs and make sure your application is tailored to it. Also talk about motivation and why you want it. BTW I was successful despite no relevant work experience - it is possible.

I have an MSci in Physics and am coming to the end of a PhD in EEE.
I agree very much with someone who posted earlier about making whatever you have in terms of qualifications or experience sound highly relevant to this post. When you write your personal statement get a blunt-speaking friend to read it with a time limit of five minutes and try to tick off the points in the person spec as they do so. If there's anything left unticked after that time, give some explicit evidence that you meet that point.

Thanks, that's really sweet.

I will definitely let everyone know the decision I make about the programme, and will keep all hopefuls for next year updated on the pro's and pitfalls of the programme!

Just got an email saying I made the reserve list for Audiology. I know that's as good as a rejection...can't imagine anyone turning down a position! :frown:

Feeling pretty rubbish right now, about to be made redundant from my current job and having put all my heart and soul into this. Still, good luck to those still waiting.

Maybe I'll back back on here next year...

Sorry to hear that, but don't give up hope just yet....

You don't know what peoples circumstances are... unable to relocate already offered another job etc.

Well that's what i'm hoping anyway! (reserve for biochem)

Don't give up yet, there's still hope! I didn't even make the reserve list for audiology :frown:

The most frustrating thing is I can't see a clear/obvious way to improve for next year. My experience/knowledge didn't seem to be the problem (it was barely asked about and the questions that did relate to this seemed to be my best answers) and I was really friendly/open. I'm just not sure what they were looking for exactly in the ridiculous speed dating interview (some tables more than others!). The whole set up makes it very hard to know how to improve my chances for next year.. Need to somehow figure out what each of the 'buzz words' were, grr!

Hello there! I'm really sorry to hear that you had bad news :frown:

Can I ask, what are your qualifications? Do you already hold a BSc/MSc/Diploma in Audiology? I ask because I wonder if my background made it harder for me (I only have a Biology BSc and my audiology experience has all been through volunteering). I'm sure I could have 'performed' better but am not sure how I could improve any further - short of getting an Audiology degree, which I can't afford to do!

It does worry me that next year might be even harder for non-specialists like me; I can imagine that they might start to accept only specialist graduates in order to keep the number of applicants lower.

Anyway, best of luck if you do apply next year!
