Hi, I'm currently in college and off to university to study Msc Biological Sciences this year hopefully! Becoming a clinical scientist looks very interesting, especially as you get to specialise in specific niches- loving the sound of microbiology! I was just wondering, what exactly do you have to do? I'm a tad confused as when I search clinical scientist in google, NHS healthcare scientists comes up...is this the same as becoming a clinical scientist?
Err. Essentially yes. Follow that guidance and you'll be on the right track.

Its all a little political with the names at the moment. They want(ed?) to change our professional titles to "Healthcare Scientists" (to be in line with our grouping as Healthcare Science, which includes technologists, and is our equivalent to Allied Health Professional) - but then there would be a big problem with people preferring to employ 'Clinical Scientists' over 'Healthcare Scientists' - which frankly sounds a little bit too close to 'Healthcare Assistant' for comfort, and people *may* interpret those scientists as not being suitably qualified/registered.

Sooo after a big kerfuffle, STP candidates are currently set to continue on to achieve HCP registrations as 'Clinical Scientists'.

Hi thanks for your feedback, I have an idea now

How did everyone else find the maths questions? I thought they were horrible, give me dilution factors and p values, what relevance do stocks and exchange rates have?!

(I know it was to test our maths and that it didn't have to be relevant, but surely they could have made some of them science based)

It said in the small print they may test you again, but in my experience (with other applications not this one) they only say that to put people off cheating.

Ok I've just done the tests. They were pretty hard but glad it's all over.

I just want to ask has anyone here shadowed a clinical scientist or done work experience in a clinic? If so how did you go about arranging it?

I agree, they were horrible. I got the "we'll contact you in March" email, but I don't fancy my chances too much given my performance in those tests. I thought the logical reasoning one was quite hard, but the numerical one was a *****.

I think the point of the tests is to see how you deal with lots of information under pressure (and to cut the number of applications they have to read). The maths isn't that hard when you know what to do, but the questions are so wordy that it's hard to work it out, especially if you panic like I did! It does seem stupid to me, most biology/physics students aren't going to be familiar with stocks and such, and the practice tests give you absolutely no idea of what to expect. There must be a better way of doing it.

Did you actually get a email saying you hadn't passed them, or did you get an email saying "we'll contact you in March"? If it's the latter, you didn't fail.

yeah i got the 'contact you in march one', but i haven't heard anyone say they've got a fail email.. have you?...so I'm guessing everyone gets the same one?.. because I don't think it is actually possible for me to have passed seeing as i ran out of time on question 9 haa... and then guessed a few.

I have always been fine with maths but that was too little time for those long silly questions!

I just took the tests and numeracy one went fine, on completing the logic test it says: Test Complete
Thank you for submitting your test. Your results are now being processed." and it's said that since like 10 minutes now. Whaaaaaaaat is going on?

I logged in again on a different page: and saw "You have already attempted to start the test and can not start again. If you feel this is a technical error, please click here to contact our technical team." left them a message - but they won't get back to me until tomorrow at 9am!!!! grrrrr. How how how upsetting

    anyone else having this problem?

Yeah, I had wondered that, since I haven't heard of anyone failing them, either. Lots of people (on this thread, anyway) failed at the test stage last year, so I assumed it would be the same this year. Plus, they did say on the Facebook page that you'd be told if you failed, so I don't know what's going on:dontknow:

If you've completed both tests, that's it, there's no more to it. Did you actually do the logical reasoning test or just the practice test?

E-mail them saying you think there's been a technical fault, explaining what you've said on here. Wait until tomorrow for a reply.

I feel exactly the same ... but I think I did pretty well on the logic one. So fingers crossed

Yeah that's all i can do at this point, better just stay calm and see what happens tomorrow. Good thing I'm not in the lab from 9am and the deadline isn't an hour after that or anything.... :lies:

It was kind of stupid for them to set the deadline just after the weekend, really. They're going to be inundated with technical queries about the tests from panicked applicants tomorrow morning.

JUST got my reply - they reset the 2nd test for me! just sat it and now received the generic "we will contact you in march" email - out of interest - those saying they failed - were they informed? or did you just know based on your performance. Thanks x

OMG! I did worse in my mathematical test this year than last year!! Logical was easy.

(I don't know if I have failed or passed yet, but recieved the generic waiting e-mail)

I just feel so frustrated with myself, this is the third year I'm trying to apply now... I just so badly want this!!!
