uni

im so split in the middle between medicine or computerscience, but i took bio chem and cs alevels only, not maths.

meaning my uni options are really slim for computerscience. in contrast to med ik it really matters for employment what uni you go to(for cs) but my best option would be leeds i think. is it a good uni?
if i do decide i want to do cs should i maybe redo year 12 and take maths??? at the same time i was thinking of taking a gap year to figure out what i would want to do with my life but then that would mean id be back 2 years
my brains scrambled i shouldve flipped a coin at the beginning of year 12 😮💨

I do medicine and have gone through all of the applications etc, on your point about where you'd need to go for employment - usually it doesn't matter what uni you go to to get a job. Really think about whether medicine is actually what you want to do. It very hard work and there are lots of yucky bits aka long days, hospital shenanigans, and plethora of bodily fluids. You would also need to do the UKAT exam and have work experience etc. I suggest potentially another gap year if your indecisive, maybe take a healthcare job and see how you like it. In spite of that, I absolutely love medicine and it can be really rewarding

yeah i most likely will take a gap year, thank you (:
If you are only 'thinking' of Medicine - then do something else.

There are other ways of working in healthcare
Other NHS roles - https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/explore-roles
Medical roles in the Navy - https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/careers/roles-and-specialisations/branches/medical

Or, look at Uni subjects like Natural Sciences (multidisciplinary science degree), Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Virology, Genetics, Phamacology/Drug Discovery, Biomedical Engineering etc.

Here is a list of courses from Swansea University Medical school you can take in the medical field without actually taking Medicine. If you are successful in these you can apply for graduate Medicine.

Hey,

I am a current 3rd year at the uni of Nottingham.

I study natural sciences and had never heard of it before I started to look at uni courses and was stuck between courses.
Every uni works it differently but at Nottingham it works by studying 3 sciences in your first year then dropping down to 2 for second and third year.

From the A levels you have done you could study a combination of the following:
Biology
Cancer sciences
Psychology
Chemistry
Archaeology
Earth sciences
Ecosystems and environment

Nottingham is quite unique in the fact that as well as offering a year to study abroad or in industry you can also complete a year in computer science as part of your degree.
If you are interested in medicine and computer science this could be a way to do both potentially.
Otherwise you could retake maths like you said and that would give you the opportunity to stusy maths from first year and take modules in computing through that.

I have left a link below if it sounds like something that might interest you,
If you have any other questions just let me know,
Emily

Hi there,

Computer science and Medicine are two very different degrees that will take your life and career in two different directions. They don't really have much in common as well. Before dedicating potentially 3-6 years of your life to studying one of these in University I would recommend evaluating why you're choosing these and which career is more suitable for you. Medical school is a very gruelling and long experience. It would be a shame to discover halfway through that it's not suited for you.

If you choose to study computer science I would recommend collating the universities whose entry requirements you fulfil and ranking them based on your preference. If you're dead set on certain universities whose requirements you don't already meet I would evaluate why that is, and if its worth redoing a year. At the end of the day you will be dedicating the next few years of your life to studying that degree in whichever university and then forging a career based on the outcome of those years. You wouldn't want to have any regrets.

If you choose to study medicine and your qualifications match the requirements of universities then I wouldn't be too fussed about the specific university choice as all medical graduates are looked at as the same regardless of your university and are all employed by the same body (The NHS).

If you're very conflicted then a gap year isn't a bad idea. There is no rush to jump into university, take your time as you wouldn't want to rush out of a degree you hastily chose.

I hope this has helped

*Ethel
