Universal credit

Can anyone tell me how my universal credit will be affected by student finance? I'm a single parent with 2 kids and will be studying full time. I've applied for all the student finance I'm entitled too however someone suggested that I don't apply for the maintenance loan as I will get my UC taken off me. Is this true? The only bit I'm really worried about is the rent aspect as I couldn't afford to pay full rent with just a student loan.

It is true that UC take maintenance loans into account as income but only so much of it (full details can be found on gov.uk).
I wanted to let you know that if you don't take the loan/grant, dwp can still use it in the calculations of your income as you have passed up money to help your household.

You can always ask your case manager to give you a breakdown of what will be taken into account and for how long as the final amount is divided between your study months, not the full 12 (unless that's how long your studying for)
