If degree holder is seeking advice, please feel free to ask me here. I am happy to offer any guidance or support that I can provide.

Sure.
Recent graduate from CUHK.
Only limited research experience (final year project and a few summer attachments at different labs), no paper published (yet).
Have doctor shadowing, obtained multiple first aid certificates, and frequently volunteered at community centers, a few times at hospital
Student tutor for various courses at the university.

Honestly don't think I have a strong profile regarding extracurricular activities, but I do have a relatively strong GPA, (>3.9/4), likely first place in my major for both major GPA and cGPA for at least all the first 3 years based on the scholarships I have received.

Thank you so much for sharing.

I have one more question that might sound dumb, but I really wish to know. How did you find doctors to shadow as a student in HK?

For volunteering works, I am from a non-trad degree and always had a hard time finding a point to start. Did you start volunteering via school activities, or through proactively applying to community centres (say 青年空間)/hospitals etc?

Sorry for having so many questions.

No worries.

Regarding my doctor shadowing experience, I was fortunate to have the opportunity through connections. I recommend try reaching out to family and friends, or even emailing different professors and doctors. While you mostly likely receive rejections or no responses at all, it's always worth trying, cuz eventually you just need one offer.

As for my volunteer work, I applied through both my university and community centers. I believe that any form of volunteer work can be valuable, regardless of how you apply for it. Additionally, you can consider reaching out to hospitals for potential volunteer opportunities, as some have resumed their programs recently. You just need to submit an application form, and a social worker will interview you and if everything is fine, you can start volunteering there.

Hope this helps.

CUHK just released a few offers to local degree holders. HKU probably hasn't? Haven't heard of any? So the game is still not over yet. Stay positive!
Local degree holders can probably guess your chance of getting in based on your cGPA.

However it is always good to plan for alternative options, like going abroad or mainland china if rejected.
I was prepping UCAT already and planning to apply to the UK med schools if rejected by both HK med schools

Thank you so much again for the advice.

That’s immensely helpful. I guess I must admit that’s the end for me this cycle, but now I have a solid idea how to restructure and strengthen my application.

Btw, good luck to you and all those who received an offer! Your hard work paid off and I am sure you all would become great physicians!

Good luck to you too! But honestly I think GPA is the major consideration in HK. So if you dont already have a strong academic profile, consider doing a master of science in a related discipline and get distinction at an OVERSEAS HIGHLY RANKED university. Or just consider applying for med schools overseas or in the mainland china.

Actually I am from HKU and holds a cGPA of 3.8X/4.3 (non-healthcare/science degree though).
I ordered the academic attainment profile and knew that I already ranked the 2nd/3rd in my cohort with Dean’s Honor List in all years, but numerically that’s definitely much less impressive than all of you who got matriculated.

I don’t think there’s any more I can work on my academic background except doing another degree. So I could only focus on ECAs. :frown:

Usually status change from waitlist to under consideration is a sign of getting offer, according to previous threads  But please do come back and let us know when you actually receive an offer.

Anyone else have their status changed as well? mind sharing your background? like overseas or local unis

Just found out I got an offer from HKU! Didn’t get notified on it though, I just found out by routinely checking my application status on the portal. So for the ppl reading this please remember to check your portal!!

Major-wise, my professional GPA was 3.9wish. But that’s no use.

I believe that your GPA is quite impressive, although one potential limitation could be that your major is not directly related to medicine.
A HKU med student (Calvincheungtc on ig) earned a second upper-class degree in biomedical science from UCL. He then pursued a Master's degree at UCL (only 1 year(?)) and achieved a distinction before finally being accepted into HKU's medical program. By following a similar path, you may be able to enhance both the university ranking of your application and your academic profile, while also demonstrating your determination and aptitude for medical knowledge.

This was one of my alternative options if I got rejected at the end as well.

Personally I think you don't need to have tons of ECAs, just having some, as long as you can show that you know what you are applying for, and you have the qualities needed to be a medical doctor.

Thanks again for your reassuring words.
I followed his YouTube channel too and remember he also went to chiropractic school for one year or so before pursuing med. That for sure demonstrated lots of determination and the qualities HKU is looking for.

Getting another MSc is something I have thought of before tbh, just that with a non-sci background I found my options quite restricted (plus I am having a FT job now so going abroad for a master gambling for medicine is another psychological barrier).

Anyway, thank you for pointing the possibility out again. Will definitely reconsider the option. After sometime of working, I am more certain that medicine is what I want to do after all after failing to get in since high school

Does anyone know whether mbbs informs the applicants when their application is unsuccessful?

No, HKU doesn’t give separate notice to unsuccessful applicants. The status would be automatically change to Unsuccessful around 31 Aug.

GCE A-level student: My status on HKU is still waitlisted. If I get 4A*, is it likely I will get an offer?
