Hey! I’m a first year studying CMCI and I really enjoy it… I’m happy to answer anyone’s questions

I don’t quite meet the CMCI grade requirements (AAA) but am really interested in this course. I already have my results A* A B (and don’t qualify for contextual). Is there any chance of being accepted - did anyone get offered a place with lower grades? Thank you.

hi! I currently have an offer for cmci and I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about what you have actually studied in the course so far and what you have found most interesting etc! also what were ur grades to get in? I'm predicted AAA but think I'm more likely to get AAB or A*AB

The first year core modules are policy and politics (learning about the creative industries, very economics based, have to do some stats work), media 1.0 (learning basic media theories like feminism, semiotics ect.), media 2.0 (audience theories), cultural production (you get to make a video essay but the video quality isn't assessed), culture and identity (looking at subcultures and cultural theorists) and the management. For the optional modules I did fandom and memory.

I you want to do any practical work it isn't the course for you, and tbh if you're mainly interested in media it isn't really the right course either. I was primarily interested in media and wanted to do a theoretical course so I thought this would be the best one, but I've found it quite similar to a level media.

No exams is a big plus though. The seminars are a bit hit or miss- honestly depends on who the lead is and if your group actually participates lol, but I guess that's the same across all university.

Where else have you applied and what are you interested in? I had a contextual so my offer was AAB- so you might have a chance? I think the course was up for clearing so that might be in your favour.

thank you for the info!! I’ve applied to UAL for Media Comms, UCL for Media, Warwick for Media and Leeds as a wildcard for Chinese. I am definitely probably more a production enjoying person but my best bet for that was BCU and I didn’t want to be in Birmingham** I am just hoping my portfolio for UCL will be good enough! Are you overall enjoying the course then or is it not really what you expected?

To be entirely honest I haven't been loving it! I don't think it's very intellectually stimulating, and people from other courses doing some of the cmci modules have said the same. A lot of the modules are really repetitive. I'm in second year and I barely feel as though I've learnt anything new. But that could just be a me problem!

I kind of went in thinking that I would be able to turn it into a media course by catering the optional modules towards it, and I underestimated how big of an aspect the culture and creative industries part of it would actually be!

I think media is a quite a tricky subject to find an undergraduate course for as there's barely any theory-based ones, so that's probably what's disappointed me. Definitely wouldn't recommend if you want to do practical stuff. Whilst some of the assessments can be done creatively, you aren't marked based on skill, not will you be taught any! The course is more focused on telling you why the creative industries are so hard to get into, rather than teaching you how to actually get in hahaha

Sorry I've been so negative! I'm sure others really enjoy it, so make sure you speak to multiple people haha!

Hi, I have an offer for Psychology and a Year Abroad at King’s but I want to swap to this course! you said it was in clearing? is it likely for it to be in clearing again do you think? also were there any study abroad opportunities presented to you? I’ve emailed Kings Apply to request a change in course but I was wondering if i’d have to firm kings first

Can you recommend if I should get an iPad, a MacBook, or a windows laptop? Preferably, I’d rather the MacBook, but do you need windows for the course? What did you use at uni?

What do you mean by if you wanted to study media this isn’t the course for you, what does this course focus mainly on? Also I’m aware this course isn’t very practical, but do we do any assignments that are practical? I heard someone say they did a documentary once

I just found the media modules really repetitive and not very detailed. Albeit, there have been a few modules I liked- the second year video games was really good as it went into both broader theories, games based theories and we actually got to play and study specific games. I really liked how in depth it was, but I haven't found that on the other modules. We also got to make a (text based) game, which was the most practical thing I've done. I have had opportunities to make video essays (which I'm guessing is what the documentary that you're referring to is?), but it's not like we were actually taught or marked on the actual video part of it, if you get what I mean?

I also underestimated how much time I would spend doing culture and creative industries. I wanted a media degree, but I just don't feel as though that's what I've paid for
