I'm assuming here you mean sixth form/further education college. At University you are more independent than at college and likely go out drinking more. It's harder to make friends because friends can be made situationally in college more easily but uni still has many friend groups.

Traditional concepts of popularity are less apparent and there is a bigger focus on careers. The next part depends on the uni and degree but at least for me, uni is significantly harder and more time consuming than college ever was.

Are you referring to Durham University and its colleges? If yes, then colleges are just halls of residence here at Durham. Durham is a collegiate university- there are 17 colleges and you can choose which one to go to based on your preference. So while you're at Durham, you will also always be part of a college.

Colleges have different facilities like a dining hall, gym, library, bar, social spaces etc. As a fresher, your college will organise a freshers' week where you can socialise and meet new people at different events. I would say that the colleges at Durham are much more than just halls of residence. They have many sports teams, music and drama groups etc, which give another level of possible involvement below university teams and clubs for those who are of a lower standard or less dedicated.
