Anyone know if any specific grade boundaries from the past are usually used ?

My school said that they work it out based on how the year did

Every school will use different criteria for deciding predicted grades - mock grades, Y12 exams, teacher intuition etc.
There is no national or universal system.
Talk to your school.

If they used an actual past paper then they will be guided by the grade boundaries for that paper (in full knowledge that many students will have seen the paper, discussions about it or even worked solutions). Otherwise they'll use their experience to make something up.
