I know a girl called Athene and it's just shortened to 'Thene.
    thene is a horrible name

Also it's quite sad people only think of shops, I bet no one thinks of a goddess if I say Nike.
I think your first thought is of the most popular use of the word. so Athena is still a goddess first and foremost for most people. Nowhere near as bad as calling a kid nike

Pronouned thee-nee. It's quite cute sounding I think.

I'm not saying call a child Nike, I'm just saying it's sad how many people are saying it's a card shop or whatever.

That would happen whether he was called Oedipus, Barak, Inspecta D, ARACNOTRON! (Exclamation mark mandatory) or anything else. Same with my wife tearing her eyes out and hanging herself. I'm not sure if its in Oedipus that a mans children are fed to him in a pie, but that would probably happen as well.

    *Twitch*

No, it wasn't in Oedipus where his children were fed to him in a pie.

And Jocasta didn't tear her eyes out - Oedipus himself did. She did hang herself though.

Actually that was Thyestes who ate his children in a stew, his brother Atreus cooked them and fed them to him without him realising. And yeah, Oedipus stabbed his eyes out when he saw Jocasta hanging.

    End of Classics rant.
