I tried and failed to invite you; I think only Craggy has the relevant power.

I think maybe one of the best things about John's is there was never any hint of pressure upon us to get certain exam marks - I remember being hugely surprised to hear students at other colleges saying they're being told they have to get 2.1 minimum and 2.2 is a fail (and other stuff like basing room ballots on exam results).

Magdalene don't tend to kick many people out (though they do have a scholars' ballot), but they do only let people change tripos if they get 2.1 or better in their current subject, which made last year pretty stressful for me...

Incidentally, if you guys all want to go for formal on the Monday, I won't be at all offended! I was just hoping for a bit of company on the Sunday night, I'm happy to go and eat in Wetherspoons provided I have company
If I'm back in Cambridge I'll happily keep you company somewhere on the Sunday.

Incidentally, the reason I can't make Sunday is because I'm at john's formal :p:

Supervision essay/the rest of my work/everyone on my floor has gone out and I've got no-one to vent to. My boyfriend's gone over to Danielle's room to work and I don't want to disturb them, but feel really down. Everyone's probably fed up of my mood swings anyway

I just feel like I'm struggling to keep up with all the other linguists in college. It's a high flying college for languages, there's a lot of pressure on us to get firsts, and I've been told straight out that 2.2s aren't good enough. Seeing as I averaged a borderline 2.2/2.1 in my supervision reports, and feel absolutely swamped with work and unable to keep up with the others, it looks like that grade will slip down. I just hate feeling like I'm the worst at everything
I don't have anyone else doing my subjects at college to compare with, but I identify with the rest I reckon we just need to stick it out, in the hope that we will eventually get better.

This year's John's mathmos told me a different story though, I have a friend who's really good, and he's been told that they expect him to make top 10, they had a Michaelmas mid-term and a Lent mock exam, the people who didn't do too well got some pressure applied to them as well (that's what I was told).

I thought tripos results were listed alphabetically now, so you can't tell who comes where within the classes?

Sorry. :p: To be fair some of the other pitches were pretty much unplayable.

I get the impression from my in-college supervisors that a 2.i is pretty much assumed and we should always be pushing for 1sts. It's stressful but it certainly keeps up the work ethic.

Sounds to me like you're actually doing pretty well. 2.2's are to be expected at the beginning of the MML course unless you've just come back from a gap year abroad or something. It takes time to adjust to what Cambridge are asking from you and your grades should improve over the year as you get the knack of 'Use of' exams etc. The language side of things is mainly a question of practice at this stage and those who are doing better have probably just had more practice.

And don't compare yourself to other people. At Cambridge it's REALLY not a good idea, particularly in such a small sample as the students in your college doing the same subject. Just be confident that you were let in because you're good enough to do very well. Also, remember that some people are let in because they have potential rather than because their current level is outstanding. This can mean that it takes them a while to shine as they have a lot of catching up to do first.

Your DoS gets your rank position. They don't usually tell you though.

When you get your marks break down letter, there's a line at the bottom saying 'You came x place in your year'

That's dependent on college, I think. I just got emails from my DoS. However, since the glorious introduction of CamSIS, it's told me my position in the year on there anywhere. And it's on my transcript. Except the 4th year, oddly.

Especially thank you for this It's so hard to know what's good and what isn't. The other linguists at Emma seemed to be getting much more solid 2.is, but like you said, I think I was let in more on my potential than my actual ability, because I had so much grammar catch up to do at the beginning of the year. It's so dispiriting to work really, really hard and still feel like I'm bottom of the pile, especially because I know that the other linguists take a lot more time off and go out more, whereas I'm regularly working very late. One of them is also dispiritingly honest and can be quite scathing - he was really shocked when our conversation teacher gave him a 2.ii/3rd and me a 2.i/2.ii, because I'm not as good as him in the classes. Stuff like that really knocks my confidence But I guess I do have to focus on how I'm doing. And I know I've improved absolutely masses since I arrived. I just still sometimes feel stupid in comparison Especially because out of my best friends here, one got a first on her first ever medicine essay, and my boyfriend is doing second year courses on the recommendation of his DoS and is also possibly taking up a third year one. And I'm just far too used to comparing myself to other people as a measure of my success! I guess I should just be happy with how I'm doing at the moment

EDIT: Also, thanks to my mysterious repper

That sounds like a good idea. Lets say that the 2nd - Clare Formal - goes ahead anyway, and then whoever else is around and wants to, can meet up with Athena on Sunday night too. I'm quite happy to socialise two nights in a row! It doesn't have to be a formal both nights in a row.
