Talking about Russian, I'm going to have to start expanding my vocabulary beyond 'vodka'. I'm thinking about the language school this summer - do our resident linguists have any thoughts on it?
wow i think you will need committment! it's difficult! i did extra curric russian when i was 13 and it was so hard. but if you love grammar and languages then i think it's a great language (even though i've moved on to arabic now lol) but dont take it unless you are committed to learning a language. if you just randomly feel like doing a language for fun i'd recommend spanish, its easy to learn and fun to speak. plus, its great for holidays (not that russian isnt but it requires more planning etc to go on holiday there, unlike say salamanca or barcelona)

I suspect she may be specialising in Russian Politics, which would explain the language choice.

lol ok fineeeee. excuse me minimo. but still like i said russian is cool and if you are doing russian politics then i assume you will have enough drive to handle the language.

maybe we should wait for zoedotdot to comment as well. im basing all my input on the extra curric russian i did when i was 13 with a crazy german teacher

Sorry - didn't mean to suggest your post wouldn't be interesting/useful to her. I'm sure it will. Was just context for you.

I'd love to learn more languages, I'm trying to learn Spanish and advanced German via podcast but its just not the same as learning when you can talk to other people.

If you enter from Mill lane side it's the first buildling on your left when you walk through the entrance. It's up some stairs.

Remind me never to learn Russian if Spanish is so much easier...I think Spanish is hard enough as it is!

I'd avoid Finnish then - 16 cases and agglutinative with it!

Wow! Does 'aggultinative' mean that long words are made from loads of smaller words?

Actually, it's not so much Spanish grammar that I have issues with but rather Spanish pronunciation/speaking - I can write fairly well but I'm not very fluent when I speak

No, but I'll need to read late to prevent this essay ending in an all nighter in a few days.
I was at gym late too so everything's late.
I hope the rain stops and the snow starts. Tomorrow I want to walk on powdery dry stuff, not cold slush!

Bleh, I think I had to do that one over the vacation. It kind of has a table explaining it which is really hard to decipher. I'm currently trying to write 400 words of Spanish

@ Minimo - okay, in that case, go for it! You'll have the motivation to struggle through the (sometimes epic) grammar, & it seems like it will help your future plans

You probs have v. little/no free time right now, but if you wanted to get started early, we use Colloquial Russian as our beginner level textbook.
