    Hey Everyone. Any ideas with this?

    Write an equation, including state symbols, for the reaction with an enthalpy change equal to the standard enthalpy of formation of liquid nitric acid, HNO3

    Bit of an oddly worded question but maybe its just asking for you to write an equation to show the formation of HNO3?

    Enthalpy of formation will be the formation of a product in its standard state from its elements in their standard states so:

    1/2H2 (g) + 1/2N2 (g) + 1.5O2 (g) -> HNO3 (l)

    Thanks for the reply. It is how the question is worded that is causing me problems also. I came to the same conclusion so will go with that.

    That's right - the standard enthalpy of formation is defined as the enthalpy of the reaction forming the product from the elements in their standard states at standard pressure, so that's exactly the equation they're after.
