Acquisition is the act of acquiring or obtaining something. In the general sense you could acquire a qualification, or a new pair of shoes, etc.
In the business sense the only context I've ever heard it used is in the purchase of one company by another.
You'll often hear of Investment Banks having "Mergers and Acquisitions" (or M&A) departments, which assistant by when two companies merge, or when one company acquires (buys) another.

Thinking about it really simply, acquisitions means takes over. For example, company A acquires company B, so company A takes over (buys) Company B! Hope this helps
