Hi my sister has been given an interview for a early years practitioner job at a pre-school and she's never had a job in her life she's only just finished college and never had an interview before how can she be successful?

She has been reading loads on interview tips and questions to expect and is preparing awnser's but she's not sure what to say or how to awnser them right.

Theirs one question that she doesn't know how to awnser and that's what's your weakness , she doesn't know if this will be asked but if it is as she's never had a job she doesn't know what her weakness is as she can't think of any.

Any tips advice would be very welcome

Hi there.

Sorry for no replies and my late response.

A good way to approach this Q could be to state a weakness and then show a willingness to learn and develop this skill and show that they have other transferable skills which could help them overcome their weakness to make it a strength e.g. you could say leadership is your weakness as you haven't had any experience of being a leader however you feel that your good communication skills and organisation would help with ensuring a task is complete to a good standard and on time.

Hope this makes sense.
Good luck to your sister - you're so kind to ask for her!

Thank you so much for your reply , she really wants this job it's at a pre-school that she really likes.

She's been out of childcare for 7yrs and never had a job before but has missed working with children so much.

She got her level 3 childcare 7yrs ago but didn't get onto a early years degree course and went onto to do animal care as she was young she thought that was it for her dream of being an early years teacher and she's regretted following animal care all these years she's just finished an animal degree that she's hated but she's not a quitter so finished it but moving away from children has made her realize just how much she belongs their when she was on her nursery placements she felt like this is were she's meant to be but with animals she just didn't feel it even though animals are still a hobby.

She's missed children so much and can't wait to get back she just needs someone to give her a chance

In the education area someone mentioned using her lack of experience for the weakness question so theirs 2 things she can use now.

Any job interview revolving around children and young people will always involve safeguarding questions- show awareness in the different types of abuse, mention about the commitment to complying with the pre-school's child protection policy, maintaining confidentiality, knowing what appropriate actions to take when concerns arise, whistleblowing.

There may be questions on barriers to learning and how can your sister support the needs of individual children- those from ethnic background, those that speak English as an additional language (EAL), special educational needs and disability (SEND) etc.

Keeping up to date with the EYFS curriculum- an updated version came into place last year and can be found on the gov website.

General interview questions can include strengths and weakness- for weaknesses, your sister can talk about the lack of recent childcare experience. But then show that she is trying to overcome it by being proactive by engaging in CPD and seeking experience.

As with any interview, always link answers with past experiences to demonstrate what you already know and understand.

Hi everyone

So she passed her interview and they asked her to come in yesterday for a trial and she passed and has got the job but they now want 2 references and as she's never had a job she doesn't have anyone apart from her lecturers to ask so the lady said it was ok to use them and she asked 2 of her lecturers today if they'll be a reference but she worried if they'll be a good one as she's never met them as the last 2yrs of her course we're online so she worried about the references now.

She starts on Monday and will be signing her contract of employment on Monday so a little confused on why she needs references if she got the job
