Rented property filthy and full of rubbish !

It’s July and the time everyone gets the keys for their rented property for uni. We weren’t able to get the keys on the 1st because the landlord was totally unresponsive and finally got them today and it is abysmal. There is rubbish everywhere, totally filthy and dusty and there’s dirty furniture and old belongings around to be thrown away! We’re still missing one key because they’re keeping it to have another cut and the landlord also said it would be a couple weeks before it’d be cleaned. Anyone got advice ??

Is this a rental property unfit for human habitation?

If you have already moved your stuff in - check in with the Landlord, and state that because this property is not fit for habitation as described and advertised you will wait until they have cleaned it and made it suitable to live in before you start paying any rent.

Check everything works before you part with any money - ask to see the property and take a check list of things to check

Ensure your deposit is secure and take lots of photographs, get evidence, and report this through to the local Council Environmental Health Dept if there is a big unresolved problem.
