A question which has sparked a variety of answers amongst our school gcse teachers in biology has arisen. The question indicates:

An optimum temperature must be maintained throughout the fermentation vessel. Which part of the fermentation vessel does not help to maintain an optimum temperature?

    A Water jacket
    B Steam inlet
    C Stirring paddles
    D Temperature probe

The answer i concluded was the steam inlet did not contribute to attaining an optimum temperature. This is because it is simply the heat source, the other parts of the fermentation vessel maintain an optimum temperature by influencing the steam heat. In addition, isn't the steams other main pupose to keep conditions sterile. The mark scheme did indicate that B was the correct answer (with no reason and in the past they have been inaccurate). But some teachers are arguing other views: such as the stirring paddles only function is to keep nutrients evenly distributed, hence is the answer.

It would be helpful if people could provide their answer with reasoning.

Thankyou, your help is much appreciated.

Well I think it's a dodgy question with some bad wording. Take it with a pinch of salt...
