Do you think if he would have regretted the decision that much, he would have said so already in the last week?
Or maybe he was not meaning what he was saying all along?

I was in a very similar situation in my first year at uni, except it was more mutual and we left it as "hopefully we'll get back together in the future". I think he's doing you a favour by saying it's over for the foreseeable future to be honest, it's very painful when you're stuck in limbo and always hoping you'll get back together soon.

Realistically, if he cared enough he would keep it going, and he seems to have moved on pretty quickly, so I really think it would be best if you take it as him ending it and try to move on. It will take a while obviously, but respect his decision and try to take all the positives from it. Most people who attempt LDRs while at university fail, but get out and meet loads of people and eventually you will get over it. I think it's the best environment to get over a breakup - you're surrounded by friends to talk to, you can go out every night if that's how you want to deal with it, there are infinite opportunities for rebound flings or more serious relationships without the hassle of distance...make the most of it!
