I would imagine it crosses most peoples minds at some point, but I'd rather it didn't. I've been given this life and I'll make something of it, I don't want to sit around and pick apart how meaningless this all is, because nothing good will come of it. If there's something you're not happy with and you have the power to change it, do so. Life is to short to spend it being unhappy with ourselves, but not so short that there's no time for change, and to find what you really want.

Well, this is me trying to have a positive outlook, at least..

I bet cave men were thinking the same though: oh another day of... doing whatever they did :yep:

And the victorians: 'oh anther day of beating eight year olds in factories, getting home and raping the wife.'

    So it could be worse.

Play a few more pranks, develop a WKD side if life's getting you down; some decent mates, et voila!

I love all the false optimism in this thread. There is no optimism as far as i can see. Life is meaningless, it doesn't matter what you do, the end result will still be the same.

I also think the same thoughts pretty much everyday.

I was stuck on the tube during rush hour today, something that happens sometimes, but today, for some reason, something clicked in my head.

I looked around and saw all the men were in suits, a lot of the women too. I thought that they had all woken up at around the same time this morning, dressed in the same way and had just spent 8 hours doing roughly the same thing.

I then thought that they were now all going home and essentially do little more than eat dinner and watch TV before going to bed and repeating it all over again until they die.

The thought of a future like that rather scares me, I must be honest.

    Anyone else feel the same?
Your eyes have been opened, so you now have the power to avoid getting into a life like that. It's the people that don't realise the futileness of modern life that should be scared.

Those that are happy to sink into that life style, and don't question their existence, are the people who don't advance human kind. Throughout history it's been the people who asked such questions, and didn't want to settle for life as it is, that have made a difference.

Hmm, a question those of you who read that may be asking is am I being serious? Yes, yes I am.

Ignorance is bliss. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what you think or do..

Why do people like you try to convince students that their lives are not meaningless on the basis that when they cease to be students, their lives will be even more meaningless? Are you professionally retarded, or just a gifted amateur?

I've been a student and I still am one, in addition to working full-time. If the OP is a student then they have yet to shape their future and shouldn't resort to despair already. They also wouldn't really be able to understand the world of the 9 to 5ers they perceive in the same way as somebody in that world would.

It's hardly a 'student-bashing' post. Try not to be so rude in the way you deal with other people, sunshine.

you cant be a very good mathematician then

life is meaningless if you allow it to be so. so theres no ultimate authority: why let the resulting ultimate freedom scare you into inaction?

So, what of those people who think it but aren't able to do anything to change it?

It would be patronising of you to roll out the old cliche that 'anyone can do anything they want to do, if they put their mind to it' because we all know that this is bull*hit.

Why would thinking about this sort of stuff somehow hinder my mathematical ability?

meh. if we brainwash everybody and reverse the paradigm shift that tailed the conception of the notion of individual liberty, then we'll ALL have meaning and we'll ALL have purpose.

Aristotle called man 'a political animal'; our telos is to constitute the state, and as long as we are suspended in the state we are men. The quanta of meaningful society is not man, but mankind.

Surely saying that he has no idea how good he has it at the moment implies that it will get significantly worse in the future?

only because you speak like youve surrendered. and any kind of exploration of any subject is going to be quite undermined by 'thinking the same things everyday'.
but do not worry; it was mostly a flippant comment.

    Laughable thread.

All those suit-laden businesspeople were travelling home from their 100k per annum job in Rush Hour, and saw you in the carriage wearing your ripped baggy jeans and listening to your iPod really loudly while trying stop your skateboard falling onto other people's legs.

I bet they thought you were the meaningless one, mate. :toofunny:
that was actually quite ******* hot.

    i shall rep you shortly.

Well that depends on his outlook, and the more negative that is, the more likely it is to get worse in future (at least in his perception)!
