The Student Room Group

My first role at drama class.......Help !

So have been attending a local drama club for last 6 months and only done a couple of very small parts till I apply and get offered the lead part in a sort of coming to age play I would say.
Anyway I play the role of a star struck 17 year old who dreams of being a you tube or fashion model, but her long suffering parents want her out of bed to get a real job.
Anyway just read script a few days ago so here is how it goes. At the start I jump out of bed, and race to the door on hearing the postman knock as i am hoping for good news. The rest of the play then centres in the living room (about an hour long).
I am therefore in my pyjamas/nightwear for the duration of the play which I was not expecting as I thought i might get some glam outfits.😢 The play centres around my parents giving me advice, me trying to persuade them all will go well and the careers advisor turning up. All this time I do not dare leave the living room as the letter from the postman remains on the table as I am scared to open it or leave it for my parents to see.
Anyway I feel slightly nervous but not too bad, but the main thing is what sort of nightwear should I have on bearing in mind that is what I will be wearing for the whole play but want to look slightly glam and really want to look good. My drama teacher suggests silk pyjama top with shorts or silk nightdress down to my knees but is happy to leave it with me as have known each other a long time. I already have silk pyjama shorts and top so may go with this although i normally wear a robe and slippers when i get up but seeing as I am trying to get to the postman first this has been ruled out. so please let me know what you think will look best (pyjamas or nightdress) and also barefeet or short socks? I am 19 years old and 5 foot 9 slim figure.
Does not sound a big deal but really want to look good.

To start with very well done. I have done a little bit of drama years ago but no big part. You part sounds like fun so enjoy it. Are you more worried about having to wear nightwear in front of a possible audience or just that you are unsure of what to wear?
I can see you that they want you to look glam as that is what the part centres around.
I think silk pyjamas are lovely.

I think silk pyjamas are lovely, although if you have long or lovely legs then a nightdress is good although if you fell or sat on sofa it better to check how long or short it is.
I see that you are jumping out of bed to get to the postman first so I suppose by the time you out on a bathrobe and slippers then he may be gone lol. I vote for the silky pyjamas and if you are hurrying out of bed then you will have to go in your bare feet. Why don't you paint toe nails same colour as your pyjamas which would look lovely.

Thanks for reply, I thought my post was lost as nobody replied for ages. I am not nervous about what I am wearing in the play as I wear this at home but just with a knee length bathrobe when i get up at home but obviously not for the play as would take too long to put on.
I just wanted to see what people thought would look nice as want to make good impression. I had meant short white bed socks that I would already have on in bed so I would not have to go in my bare feet for the entire play but my drama teacher is now over so I showed her the posts and she thinks painting my toes is a great idea and having a laugh at my questions.
Let me know if you think barefeet or short white socks would look best as I am outvoted for now.😢

If you just out of bed then barefoot is best look especially with shorts. What is wrong going barefoot, as I agree with your teacher about painting nails for glam look.

Yes I agree it adds more glam and I am just out of bed as you say. I just never go barefoot normally when I get up I suppose so will feel very strange especially when performing in front of people. I never normally wear bed socks but seeing as I cannot wear slippers i thought it a good idea to at least have something on my feet.
Anyway it is only 2-1 against me so playing to what vote reaches 3 first. Bit of fun.

What a fun part to play so good luck and I am sure you will do well. Let us know how rehearsal goes and if you go on stage or get an audience.
Just noticed about what you could wear, for nightwear I agree silk is lovely, whether it is pyjamas or a nightdress is how comfy you would feel in performances. A knee length nightdress does not look good with socks so you would need barefeet. What sort of floor are you on ? If it is an old uneven wooden hall type floor then socks or slippers would be better. If floor is smooth then you should be barefooted in shorts or nightdress as it looks better for glam. Sorry but you asked lol, you need to remember you are not at home but in the play so you are a different character.

Have been doing a bit of rehearsal last 40 minutes or so with my drama teacher and another drama class member. Have decided on the silk pyjama shorts and top as it looks lovely and also comfy after trying them both on so happier now as most seem to agree with this. Most of rehearsal's and the play will take place at local community centre which has a stage which will be covered with a big rug and sofas for the play.
Have done first two scenes now a few times but not got two members of the cast till tomorrow so doing them a few times to get used to them.. I have rehearsed in my silk pyjamas and went barefooted too as got outvoted 😒 but not too bad and getting used to it.
PS ....You do know you cast the third vote😜 so i lost

Glad your practice went well and if course it will seem strange doing dress or pyjama rehearsal but you will get used to it are a couple of times. What colour are silk pyjamas anyway
