You may have thought that after the wide dissemination of Foxe's Book of Martyrs, Catholics would have been ashamed and said "not in my name" but no, "once a Catholic always a Catholic" ruled over such reasoning.
The brief Reign of "Bloody" Mary and the compromising under Elizabeth resulting in division among Protestants were seen as weakness, an opportunity to take control again through unity and strength.
