why don't girls these days like being called ''birds''?

How come? As far as i can tell, it carries no intentional sexist connotations and in no way demeans women's abilities. It is just an affection term for women. I've always used it personally but on tsr i've noticed a lot of you don't like it. What is your reasoning?

in fact where i live, even girls call each other birds...but then, we also call each other sluts, slappers, whores and bitches as a friendly thing so make of it as you will.

i know! It's just a term. And although not everyone is familiar with it depending on where they come from i don't understand how it can be construed as offensive :s-smilie:

On tsr when i've called girls birds they've got really offended. You'd think i'd said ''you're a woman. you are rubbish'' the way they reacted to it. IT'S JUST A TERM

or am i missing something?

I don't usually use it, but I know some girls don't like it, metaphorically refering to them as animals and all. :yep:
Say whatever you like though.

Personally, I dont like being called a 'bird'. It sounds a bit chavvy-ish I think...
It generally depends on how you say it....

These days?
Becasue we're not errr birds.
Same as we don't call men an animal name, I can't imagine you liking it either.

well for a start; most birds smell, they have lice, and they crap on the floor of their own home.

Reply 14

It sounds very northern working class, all beer bellies and tattoos. That's why I don't like it.

Reply 15

I don't mind it. Girls who make a point about being offended when you call them a 'bird' are those who enjoy getting worked up about nothing.

But the term is a euphemism not a literal reference. Surely women have thye ability to understand that i don't actually think they are birds?

Northern Ireland. Now London.

At no stage have I known a girl to like being referred to as a bird.

I don't really mind it- as in, it doesn't exactly anger me or anything- but it does feel a little bit strange, as far as terms go. I suppose its because there's no male equivalent- I think it becomes easier to accept being called something weird if everyone else is being called something equally weird.

Some of my boyfriend's friends who aren't on first name terms with me have spoken of me by "Al's bird", but if my boyfriend called me his bird I think I'd be a little taken aback, maybe a tad offended.

My parents are friends with a couple who have for some reason decided not to use each others' first names... they just call each other "bloke" and "bird"

Meh, doesn't bother me. but then, despite being in Cornwall it so happens my Dad and some of his friends are from further up north, so used to being called different types of names (petal and such more than bird, but still).
