Maths with Data Science at LSE

What is this course actually aimed at? Looking at the modules it looks nothing like other traditional Math courses.

Is it designed for quantitive finance in particular?

I am just confused as to why it is so unique. Is there a certain role it is designed for?

lse is a uni specialised in the social sciences, so none of the courses that the maths department at lse offers are supposed to be like traditional maths courses. The maths is mainly taught with an application to social sciences in mind (yea that basically means finance in this context).

Thanks!

I was likely going to head into finance after a Maths degree anyways. I have experience with social sciences at A-level, so I’m thinking it could be a great option.

How much essay writing do you think there is? I found economics at a-level reasonably interesting, but hated the essay stuff.

Thanks again

well i've got some good news for you- everyone i've talked to doing maths and/or economics at lse has said that there are no compulsory essay modules in first year, so many of them have literally done 0 essays the whole year. i personally can't vouch for that because i havent joined the uni yet but from what i've heard even the economics modules are basically just maths

Quite competitive, I’ve heard cases where people with 3 A*s are getting rejected.

However, if you meet the entrance requirements, focus on your PS and dedicate a large amount of attention towards getting the best possible grades you can get, then there should be nothing for you to worry about, because you’ve given your best effort.
