Video essay BLOG.

Hey the people of TSR, hopefully you're day is going well so far.

I'm currently in the beginning stages of writing and planning a video essay. The topic is a Half Life 2 mod "Nightmare House 2".
The point of the video will be to talk through the plot and then give it an overall review - a bit like the style of video you'd see on Pyrocynical or something.

So my question is, do you have an advice on the planning, writing and (the area I have the least experience :hmmmm2: ) translation into video format?

Absolutely anything would be hugely appreciated!:jive:

Whilst you're here, got any Half Life 2 mods you'd recommend I'd play?

EDIT: I've decided to use this thread as a blog to keep track of how this thing is going to help motivate me to completion

You could make it with recorded PowerPoint, Screencast-O-Matic, or iMovie.
You could use slides, quotes, text, full-screen or thumbnail piece-to-camera, voice-over, animation, vfx, film clips, screenshots.
Make sure that the size of your file is manageable for home upload, it should be an mp4 video file at 720p resolution.
Avoid High Definition (HD) recordings.

This is super helpful stuff thank you :h:
Update:
So I've been writing a little more today. I'm pretty sure I'm getting the hang of the writing style and flow.
Either way, there's still a mountain of more to write so I better get on with it. Any tips, please send them my way. :proud:
Here is some general advice about writing for video presentation. Not sure how useful they all are but hopefully you can cherry pick a few.

EXAMPLES OF GOOD PRACTICE
Aim for a well-paced essay that works in ONE viewing. Test it out on people before you submit.
If you’re using Powerpoint, design strong, simple slides. Limit how much visual information is presented in each slide and only include information you have time to explain.
A well-considered & tidy package of programme clips which support the points being made.
Rehearse your voice-over record and listen back speak clearly and use variety in your voice - don’t rush. Pause briefly at key points to give the audience time to think about what you are saying.
Explain/define key concepts or jargon
Grab the audience with a bold intro get us interested in what you are doing as quickly as possible with a hook.

THINGS TO AVOID
over long quotes (avoid putting up too much to read especially if in a small font)
quotes not held long enough (they’re gone before you can read them –should be able to read them twice)
reading the voice-over too quickly to make it fit (this can make difficult to take in what’s being said)
glitches (VO edited so tightly the fronts and ends of words are clipped)
cramming in too much (avalanche of information difficult to take in)
expecting the viewer to read something (e.g., a quote) while you are talking about something else (it’s challenging to do two things at once)
missing in-text citations (making it unclear where information has come from)
using jargon, specialist terms or important concepts without defining them.
Thanks again Cheadle, this is great stuff to know  +rep
