experiment shows that the relative molecular mass of dinitrogen tetraoxide at 60C and a pressure of 1 atm is 58.0; not 92.0 as indicated by the formula. The cause is thermal dissociation:
N2O4 (g) <-> 2 NO2 (g)

a) calculate the degree of thermal dissociation (alpha) at 60C

please help...its probably simple, its only 2 marks... :confused: :confused:

Let x be fraction of gas dissociated:
We know rmm of NO2 = 46 and rmm N2O4 = 92 - rmm of our mixture = 58

so:

46x + 92(1-x) = 58

92 = 46x +58

x=0.74 .... so 74% of gas is dissociated
