Well what response did you expect? No one gives a whatever if you're from England or from a private school, ok? If they got rid of anyone who fitted into that category Edinburgh would be a very empty university considering the majority of people I know are either English or private schoolers. Or both.

If your appliction is crap though, then yeah its an immediate rejection.
If i may quote from the Edinburgh website....

"Factors considered in addition to your academic qualifications, personal statement and academic reference include:

Applications from schools in the local area and the wider locality.

Those whose parents or guardians have not previously attended university (this information should usually be supplied on the UCAS form).

A holistic decision is made with regard to the individual's academic achievements, taking into account the context and circumstances in which these were achieved.

For our highly competitive degrees, offers are normally made to applicants who possess academic qualifications far in excess of the minimum and/or for whom one or more of the additional factors may also apply."

Hardly not "giving a whatever". No need to get too carried away mate, was only asking.

*sighs* Another applicant who has read too much into the application criterion. If you look at criterion for most other universities, you'll find that they're similar. In the vast majority of cases, background/context/etc is not an important issue - what is important is the quality of a personal statement, suitability to a degree and academic achievement. Not where you went to school.

An offer is unlikely to materialise until well into the new year.

Relax. The important bit is "offers are normally made to applicants who possess academic qualifications far in excess of the minimum and/or for whom one or more of the additional factors may also apply." For lots of people this just means being predicted AAA or AAB and having a glowing personal statement that shows academic prowess. A hell of a lot of current Edinburgh students (and everyone who wasn't the ideal first to attend university, from a poor school who achieved As despite all the problems they suffered and also happened to live next door to their number 1 university) were probably wishing at this point in time that they were the first from their family to attend university or that they attended a school that churned out low results, but there are only so many appropriate applicants from those situations and all universities offer the same preferential treatment to those candidates - something to do with the government and the "value added" concept in education. You just have to hope that you have said the right things on your application to appeal to all the admission tutors in all the universities that you get some offers back. (The best thing to do is relax and forget about it until you have to act)

I wouldn't be so complacent about it (not that it's something to boast about or cause worry when it happens) - you'll probably receive a request for proof of exam results with your welcome pack.

As has been said, you're reading too much into it. Every university I considered applying to had similar entry requirements- for example, where I live, people living in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire/Nottingham area who went to certain schools get much lower offers and a specialist process for applications if they want to go to Nottingham or Sheffield. Thats even worse than the Edinburgh criteria, in my opinion. Yes, they say that locality and where you went to school will be looked at- for example, it is way easier to get AAA at a school where there are only 2 kids in the A level class than it is at a school where theres 30 and the teacher is aiming for everyone to get an E grade pass. But this doesn't mean that as soon as they see you're both English and from private school they will reject you automatically, which is what you were suggesting, and I was pointing out was ridiculous. Its so annoying that every single year people come on here and claim they were rejected becuse they're English or whatever, when the reality is, if your application is good enough with a great PS then you'll be given an offer regardless of where you are from.

Eng Lang are pretty slow in everything in life, so I wouldn't hold your breath for an offer this side of Christmas as a) they seem to wait until after the Jan deadline to make offers, and b) the LEL school is possibly the slowest department in the world of edinburgh university, alongside SPS. Both of which I happen to be affiliated with!

It is an amazing university so you're right there, but as I said, Ling/Lang are really really slow at everything. You'll see what I mean if you end up coming here! They are a cool department though with wicked courses and great staff so I forgive them! Obviously you might get lucky and they reply earlier though.
