Scottish people don't have an advantage in the application. Edinburgh operates a local access scheme (like most British universities) which operates to help local students in - in this case students from the Lothians and parts of the central belt. There is also a wider access scheme which is less important which applies to most of Scotland and parts of the far north of England. To be honest I've never come across someone who seems to have solely been made an offer based on geographic location, so I assume that it isn't at all important - Edinburgh certainly don't make a song and dance out of it.

As far as I am aware, you won't receive the advantages of this scheme, because while you're a resident of Scotland, I believe (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that it's the school you currently attend that is taken into account.

I'm from the states and I'm just saying that even though I applied before January 15, ucas tells me that international students could be made to wait until june for an offer. But, hopefully that's only the worst case scenario as edinburgh is the last offer I'm waiting on.

    Hey Der Kaiser

Hows it going? Thought id just check in see how your getting on with your offers any decisions?. Plus im sitting at my desk at work with not a huge amount to do, the whole office seems to be on holiday. Ive firmly accepted Glasgow , I was dwidling between glasgow and edinburgh but I cant be bothered with the edinburgh commute from where I live its a fair distance.

Anyway thought id say hi, there seem to be a few accelerated llb starters emerging from the woodwork seems like a good crowd.

    Take care

Pokersoc is fairly active. They generally play once a week at the casino and once a week in Teviot and tend to have a decent turnout. The football team is for current students only - read more about them here.

Hanging in there for now, but no new decisions. I'm still waiting on one law school here in the states and then only edinburgh, but I'd really like to hear as soon as possible as I need to be making arrangements to move somewhere. Not sure if being on the accelerated track is why it's taking so long, but if I haven't heard by may 8 I'll definitely be talking to edinburgh. Good to hear you know where you're going, that commute would be a bit much.

Hi. I'm STILL waiting on Godot, er, I mean Edinburgh. I appied in October, would you believe? I'm an LLB/grad entry guy, unconditional at Glasgow, where I'll be happy to go if Edinburgh rejects.

So Edinburgh said two more weeks?? Who did you speak to, Paul Milligan?

Well if you take a look at the link I gave above you can find out more, but the first XI is pretty experienced, most of the players are 20 or over, and all have experience playing in higher leagues than the East of Scotland. It's a decent team, they got to the 3rd round of the Scottish cup a couple of years ago. I assume they have trials, but obviously you've got to be pretty good to make the first team.

I assume that, as with all sports teams I've come across, you trial for the club generically and are assigned to a team based on their initial assessment of you. And as the terms/years progress you move up or down as appropriate to the level of skill, etc., that you demonstrate.

Yeah the link was great thanks, yeah must be tough breaking in on first year, just that av just recently been released by Ayr United{senior} was hoping even tho moving away a could play at the highest standard possible. The university has a great reputation for football but was just wondering weather to try and get in or to a local junior team, dont no the diffrence in standard????

I've had Edinburgh as my Firm for quite a while now and I'm quite excited but at the same time rather nervous that I'm not going to make many, if any friends because I decided to live at home. (Don't tell me I should have applied for accommodation because there were various reason why I didn't :P) Still just nervous because most people I know say they make most of their friends with the people they live with. Hopefully I'll make friends with the people in my class...

    You'll be fine!
As you're studying education it'll mean that you're with the same people all day every day, which will make it easier to get a bond with people rather than the 'regular' degree students as here, you're only with the same people for 33% of the time and might only see them once a week. But you won't have this problem as the education students tend to stay together and form close friendships as they see each other a lot, sort of like the medics. My flatmate in first year did primary education and her entire friendship group was made up of education students, same as our medic flatmate, whereas my friends tend to come from all over the place.

You might also want to consider joining societies so that you've got another group of people outside of your course. A lot of them have special events in freshers week for you to try them out. Make sure you get involved in the events in freshers week - loads of people go to them alone so its not like if you don't have flatmates there is no point in going as the whole point is to meet people and make friends!

I think the friendship circles at Edinburgh are slightly different than at other universities, possibly because we're not a campus university. Yes for some people their main group of friends is from their accommodation but for other people, its from courses/socities/work. There are some current students on here who say they weren't really friends with their flatmates in first year at all, whereas I have continued to live with mine each year (I'm now 3rd year) but I was just very lucky as this is abnormal. It's basically how the cookie crumbles, even if you lived in university accommodation you might not like or get on with the people you live with so it doesn't mean you're automatically going to have best friends for life through your flatmates.

I don't know who I spoke to, but they're being absolutely ridiculous. Firstly, I applied awhile ago, and they told me it wouldn't be much longer. Now they're telling me I need to provide them with an academic reference, even though they told me that because I am a nontraditional applicant that I could use an employer reference.

I'm still waiting on Glasgow too!
