Pred grades of abb and really interested in geology/earth science. Would applying for durham (aab) be a bit overshot as my risky option. I know geology isnt competitive and offers are common, but then on the other hand, durham itself is competitive.

Durham in general is competitive which means even the less demanded courses will still have a large amount of students with high grades.

However if you are eligible for contextual offers you should apply as the chance of you getting in is possible. But if you aren’t ABB will be a struggle. But there is no reason you shouldn’t apply, you never know what will happen. You also have back up options so there’s no risk in applying
Yes.
1) Geology isnt competitive so they may make you an offer - just remember you will still need those grades next August to get in.
2) Durham is keen to diversify so if you go to a low achieving state school, definitely apply.
3) One risky choice is always worthwhile - because if you dont you will always wonder what might have happened if only you had.
4) Just be prepared for No.

The usual advice for the 5 choices is :
1 'risky' choice - just above your predicted grades
2 or 3 - at your predicted grades
1 or 2 - below your predicted grades
Not only will you be likely to end up with more than one or two offers, but you will also have a range of offers.

This is important when picking a firm and insurance choice later on in the year.

It's just weird as according to their site 210 of 215 applicants got an offer for earth sciences, 2nd highest percentage or something I think out of all departments.

Hi @tony00005!

I'd agree with @McGinger and say that it would be worth applying. When I was applying to unis on UCAS we were given similar advice of having 1 challenge/stretch choice (i.e. a risker option); 1 or 2 safety net choices (i.e. requirements below your predicted grades) and then the rest having grade requirements that you meet or exceed with your predicted grades. That way you stand a good chance of getting a fair few offers to choose from when you have to pick your firm and insurance choices. The range of offers really helps.

Hope that helps

Hiya

I agree with what everyone else has mentioned. It's definitely worth putting 1-2 risky choices in your application. As long as you meet the grade reqs with your predicted grades, you might have a good chance of getting an offer esp since as you said, geology isn't a competitive course at Durham

Hi,
For the earth and environmental sciences course at Lancaster which is very similar to a Geology course, the entry requirements are ABB therefore this option may be worth looking at as lancasters environment centre is top 15 in the UK for the course and as a geography student at Lancaster myself could not recommend it enough.
here’s the link to the course information page- https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/earth-and-environmental-science-bsc-hons-ff68/#course-entry
I hope this helps,
Best wishes, Esme (Lancaster University student ambassador)
