Does anything ever come of being 'put on the list' with PhD applications?

So about a week ago I found out the interview panel had gone with another candidate, but they told me they'd like to keep me on a list of 'strong candidates' and get in touch if any relevant studentships come up in the next year.

Does anything ever come of things like this? Or do these lists tend to be so long there's no real difference from applying as usual?
