In general, if you are offered an interview by a firm, is it considered bad form to ask to have it moved to a different day?

Should be ok if you have a good reason. Try to make sure they'll still be place available - they won't bar you for asking to move the date, as long as you ask in good time.

When they call and say we would like you to come for an interview on so and so date just ask if they have any other dates available. Shouldn't be a problem at all.

I wouldn't think so, as long as you leave them plenty of time.

I literally just (5 mins ago) called up a firm that I have an interview with and asked them to move the interview to another date...the interview was moved to a week later without any fuss at all. Just call/email them and ask politely and see what they can do.
