Sixth form recommendations in London

Hi all,

I'm going into year 11 in September and have started to think about sixth forms. I have found a few which I'm considering applying to. They are:
My current school (which I'll keep a secret for privacy!)
Henrietta Barnett
King's Maths School
Harris Westminster
Woodhouse College
St Dominics College
Michaela Sixth (not sure yet)

If anyone has any experiences/thoughts on these colleges please let me know. Also if anyone has any other recommendations for sixth forms in the North West/Central London area please let me know. I'm trying to keep my commute under an hour but Woodhouse may be slightly longer.
Thanks!

Honestly just go with the school that is closest to you they are all great schools that you can get top grades with.
Would avoid Michaela however, have heard the school is unnecessarily strict and they don't have a proper set of A-Level results yet
A Levels are mostly down to your own work out of school. They all have good teachers.

If my commute was the same for all those schools, I would personally chose
1. KCLMS (as the one I'd want to go the most)
2. HBS
3. Woodhouse
4. St Dom's
5. Michaela

Thanks for your reply! Yeah like I said , I’m not too sure about Michaela. They seem overly strict and I don’t think that’s the sort of environment I want for sixth form. The schools that’s closest to me would be St Doms but the commute is a bit awkward so the easiest to get to would probably be HBS. But I currently go to an all girls school and I don’t think I really want to stay at one. So yeah I’m still very undecided haha! Thanks again for your reply

heyy , yes aim for 7/8s and you will defo get in. Also yes you don’t need to be Christian we just have compulsory re lessons once a week and sometimes go chapel. I’d say the social life is pretty good, everyone knows when to have fun and when to actually take lessons seriously. The school offers a lot of activities from sep- dec at the start of y12 which is a good way to make friends. If you have anymore questions let me knowww

ahhh thanks so much man for the reply , i worry about getting in tho cause obvi catholic ppl will get priority but regardless of that apparently the schools really oversubscribed lol, something like near 2k applying for 5/600 places? so idk🥲 i’m very keen on going so it saddens me

hopefully you get in, I’m sure you will. There’s a lot of diversity in religion over there. I’ve met more Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus than catholics lol. It is competitive to get in, minimum you need is at least 4 grade6s and 5 grade 7s but obviously aim for at least all 7s just to be safe. There’s a lot of people in one year group I’d say about 600/700 but my gcses were like the bare minimum and still managed to get a place.

ohh i seee, much appreciated bro - apparently if you’ve applied and get rejected, regarding u call on results day and have met ur grades then you’ll very likely be able to get in anyway? i think i stil might apply for my secondary as back up ofc lol

not sure tbh, but my friend got rejected because you needed a 7 to do alevel chem and she only got a 6, she tried contacting them on results day saying she will pick another subject instead of chem they never replied loool kinda sad but they were replying to a lot of people on results day so I’m not sure. Defo have backups and see what grades you need to be able to do your alevels otherwise they might just reject you from ur predicted grades

Ark Academy is actually really good the school is not as selective (to let more of their own students) but is amazing overall and they work you hard but are also chill.
I am also thinking of applying to Camden School for girls' sixth form (the sixth form is mixed)
Also, UCL Academy is not as good a school but they have great results and send lots of students to UCL as they sponsor the Academy.

I am thinking of applying there myself but am a bit apprehensive because of the Cambridge Pre-Us in some subjects instead of A-Levels as the last year of sitting them is next year and so teachers will be teaching entirely different content to what they are used to. Also, is it too intense as my grades are definitely not the highest (3x9s 6x7s 2x6s 1x5)

lol calmm 😂 i’m looking to do econ maths and most
likely geo which i acc got a 9 in yesterday bc my sch make us do one option (plus RE) in year 10 haha - is it kinda like, if ur someone who’s predicted/get 9s but someone else is predicted/gets 8s, the person with 9s will get in? cuz both are well above the minimum requirements lol😂

there's also north London collegiate school (all girls) and city London (all girls) however both are private but offer scholarships and full burseries etc. nlcs is in edgware but they use coach service so girls from literally everywhere can attend, city London is in central. other schools in north west (or very close too) include st Michaels grammar school (mixed sixth form and catholic school), hbs as you've mentioned, mill hill county school, dame Alice Owens school (in potters bar but have a bus which goes straight there). laytmer school (in enfield, north London), Woodhouse as youve mentioned. London academy of excellence Tottenham (lae) too.

Ah I see I know nothing about Pre U as I did trip sci + maths a level so can't comment on that sorry! but it's a good point.
It is intense as we have school 9-4 Monday to Saturday with and we have to 4 A levels/3 A levels + EPQ plus CPs which we have to do responses for (check the school website fir details abt what that means  )- it's all unnecessary really. you need 6 7-9 (including your a level subjects to get in) so you should be fine. admission is based on interview and entrance exam though, I didn't even give in my predicted grades when applying

Hi!

What would you say the people at Harris are like? Are the quite friendly and social? Also if you have any admissions tips then please share too!

Thanks for you’re reply! I can’t go private as I can’t qualify for a bursary. I’m considering St Michaels but it might be a bit awkward for me to travel to. Mill Hill is easy for me to get to but my current school gets better results so it doesn’t seem worth me moving there. DAO, Latymer and LAE are too far. If you’ve been to any of these places and would like to share you experience then please do!
