Thanks  I also received offers from Manchester, Nottingham and Leeds (all for BSc Neuroscience) - feel free to PM me, I'll be happy to answer your questions

What made you decide to study with DistanceLearningCentre over other centres/colleges offering distance learning?
As a mature student or adult learner, how did you make sure you had a competitive application?
Did you feel like you had adequete support with your personal statement and overall university application?

I'm currently looking at Uni's (for Business or Econ), Manchester and Warwick are two I've looked at but yet to email. Assuming you contacted them about applying/during application process, how did they accommodate you as an Access student applicant?

Extremely grateful for the thread - thank you, thank you! Honestly it came at the perfect time for me and it's been so helpful. I feel like I have a million more questions so let me whittle them down. I'd love to watch your Youtube videos so know that you have my support with them!

D45 = 45 Distinction Merits which is the highest you can be awarded in an Access course

The DistanceLearningCentre had fairly mixed reviews when I enrolled so it was a bit of a gamble tbh - eventually I just went for it! Doing the access course online gives you a lot more flexibility regarding assignments/exams/deadlines compared to a traditional HE college, and in the worst case if you do happen to have a bad experience usually you'll only lose a couple hundred £ in enrollment/course fees - definitely worth the gamble imo.

Definitely email them or give the admissions team a call, most universities will treat you fairly although some universities don't accept access to HE for entry to certain courses - it's always worth contacting them before applying just to be sure.

No worries at all  prior to enrolling in the access course there wasn't an awful lot of information about them online so I'm really happy to be helping out  Feel free to ask me any other questions you have.

PSA- Med schools are really fussy about access courses. As far as I know across the board, distance learned access courses are not accepted.

Hi, congratulations for your amazing results!!
I will be starting Access to Medicine next year and I want to get into Medicine. As you know, for getting into Medicine requires 45D in chemistry and biology. So I need to study harder in these two subjects. Do you think "A-levels" chemistry and biology textbooks will help me for self-study? Should I follow "AQA" or "OCR" textbooks? And could you please give your video links? Thank you. And good luck for the future...👍🏻👍🏻

The distance learning centre use old, dated materials and its really not hard to get distinctions.

Hi, I don't think that is true at all... I can see from your posts that you had previously studied with the DLC, but did you complete an access course in medicine/science? I imagine that studying a humanities access course is very different from studying chemistry/biology/physics etc.

I studied the biology access.

I recently completed an Access to HE Diploma in Medicine with the DistanceLearningCentre where my final grades were D45 M0 P0. I'm now going on to study BSc Neuroscience at Warwick uni.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have, I'm more than happy to answer them!

I will also be writing a review of the DLC soon and I may possibly record a Youtube video highlighting my experience doing an Access to HE diploma/how I coped with the assignments/exams and scored the top grades etc.

Im going an access course rn, have to do a illustrated report on Cell biology and I'm struggling to work out what information to put in

Hiya- you've enrolled with DLC?
I finished that assignment weeks ago and I also got a bit confused. There's a video that goes through how to draw structures so I recommend that first.

In terms of the cells themselves, I looked for websites that talked about both structure and functions. Freesciencelessons made a video on red blood cells which helped me.

The structure I've used
1) describe the shape and function of the cell
2) mention an organelle then describe how it helps the cells to carry their function- then repeat for every organelle

Pro tip: on the assessment sheet that has the TAQ questions- scroll all the way down and there should be a section that gives hints on what to include in each answer and which assessment criteria is being met. This helped me so much for graded work!

Did you work during this time and if so, how did you balance work and study commitments? I'm thinking of doing the Access to HE Science either online or in person but I'm worried about how to balance studying around working enough to financially support myself.

Thank you

hello Amar

i just started access to medicine as well with the distancelearning centre, what I am not quite sure about is the style of writing their assignment and referencing style as well, I will very grateful if you can give me guidelines, as I feel like I am not doing the right thing all the time

I was in the same position as the OP with 45D. Application was fine, although, I opted to do a Foundation Year because I was undecided on what I wanted to do, and wasn't quite convinced that despite getting 45D, that an Access course was sufficient for a science degree compared to A Levels.

After doing the foundation year I feel so much more prepared for the degree I'm doing. If I had went straight into first year after the Access course I think it would have been a huge shock for me.

This is some great information thank you , I was in the middle of deciding to study a foundation year at a lower university or access course to try and boost my grades to get into a Russel group university and I’ve messaged some unis and they’ve said I’ll probably have to sit an maths aptitude exam before being considered while reading the entry requirements it stated “case-by-case basis” and that was kind of daunting but after reading a lot of threads it’s made my opinion change about it.

It might help going to an open day perhaps to talk to some admissions tutors, that's what I did for some reassurance and I found it really helpful. If it helps, the foundation year I did was at a RG university.

Plus, it gave me an extra year to reconsider my degree and ended up changing completely once I was taught it vs self-studying via access!

How did you go about writing your personal statement? Did your tutor help you with that? and if so to what extent.

Also what qualifications did you use to write your personal statement?

How long did your access course take to complete?

hey would you be able to share your assignments so that I can use them as templates? I’ve signed up for an access to he in biochemical science at learn direct and im confused on how distinction assignments should look like

How long was the turnaround time for grading TAQs and when did you take exams?
