Does first year BTEC results affect second year results ?

Yes, it does, if you're doing an extended diploma the first grade of the three in the second year will be that. For example, if you got a distinction * in your first year and then two distinctions in second year it'll be D*DD, if that makes sense?
Yes, your first year grades do count because at the end of your second year, your teachers would look at all the units you did in both years, then add up the points and then they calculate the final grade.

If I get really bad grades in first year can I improve second year ?
Hey, so first year overall grade i got a D* how does it work for the 2nd two grades to achieve 2 more D*'s

The grade you get for each unit is converted to points and your overall grade is calculated based on the total number of points for all your units. So every exam or piece of coursework counts towards your final grade.
It does sadly, I did an extended diploma during covid and first year was teacher assessed and one unit got a pass grade. everything else over the 2 years was a distinction so i ended with D*DD when i knew i could have got D*D*D*

You can improve, you should aim to get mostly distinctions and merits in your assignments though, try not to get any passes
What if I got a pass in year 1 and Distinction as my overall in year 2?

thats what i wanna know too
It can have a huge impact if you did really poorly. I have a couple of students in the U6 who are one UMS mark off achieving the next grade up and there is nothing they can do about it. Coursework grades can't be improved after the unit is completed. Exams can only be taken 3 times in total. If you can't increase your UMS via an exam resit then there is not a lot else you can do.

Do uni only look at the overall grade or do they look at each individual unit/module?

It doesn't quite work like that. If you get a P in first year then get DD in the 2nd year you won't get DDP

I’m pretty sure it’s just the overall grade.

It's kinda both depending on course you want to study as they have individual criteria, when doing my btec I needed to have a Distinction in one of my chemistry units and a distinction in 1 of the biology units but have an overall grade of DDM.

If I got a pass first yr as my grade and I try aim for a distinction as second yr
What would be my final grade and ucas points

it depends on the size of qualification (Cert / Ext Cert/ FD / Dip/ Ext Dip etc).

Download the NQF Grade calculator from the link below. Put in all of the details of course subject and grade for each unit. For exams put in the points (your tutor or Exams officer will have those) This will give you an overall predicted grade; https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/support/support-topics/results-certification/understanding-marks-and-grades/using-the-next-generation-btec-nqf-grade-calculator.html
