Crescent Flats, no question, purely from a location point of view - you'll be right near the Endcliffe student village and it's just much nicer. I'm not sure if anyone's pointed out to you that Broad Lane Court is *right* in the middle of the red light district - though if you like that kind of thing that's fine, but I definitely wouldn't feel safe walking around there at night!

Can't speak about the flats from personal experience - I've been in Crescent Flats when I was a first year and it seemed quite nice, but I've never been inside Broad Lane Court.

broad lane is also right next to west street which is brilliant, but miles away from all other students. Broad lane flats are really nice inside all modern and based around a sort of courtyard (for want of a better word, it ain't no oxbridge) I walk past them every day on my way back from lectures, but only at about 7:30 so i don't really know what its like at night, the area is nice enough on the other side of the road though and security is top notch.

I'd say it depends what you want, location for being a student, or location for going out.

personally i'd pick being a student.

Hmmmmmmmm... not good- I'd end up getting killed because I'd start ranting on at the prostitutes about feminism! Although it would be funny to see their reactions... is it true Sheffield has the biggest red light district in England?

I used to live in Broad lane so this is my opinion.

Theres a noisy council flat at the back of broadlane court, and there are prostitutes outside there most nights (I lived there last year) and so if you're a girl you can't really walk about after dark.
I got kerbcrawled last year by some sleazy guy just walking back from the union and my friend walked me to the top of the road so I was nearly home.

There are a lot of internationals in Broad lane or there were last year so its great for meeting a diverse range of people but its not that good socially. I found last year that they tended to keep themselves to themselves and although they were very pleasant it was a case of the chinese students hanging out with other chinese students and the greeks all hanging out together etc.
It doesn't have the same social atmosphere as the other more studenty halls. I spoke to some undergrads last year and they didn't go out much and tended to stay in watching DVDs and didn't know people outside their flats. i think that there are some more organised social events in other halls but I may be wrong about that. We got the warden called on us last year for being noisy when we just had a few people in a kitchen with some booze on a friday night. Hardly the party of the century. There are alot of postgrads in broadlane which means that it does get kept very quiet, I don't think its a good place for undergrads.

Its near west street and town but isn't near a big supermarket. Theres a Budgens and tesco metro nearby but its not good for doing a bulk shop and ends up quite expensive.

The laundrette is very small and half the time the machines are out of order there are only 3 washers and 3 dryers so you sometimes have to queue for a couple of hours to get your washing done. The flats inside are newish but aren't that nice. My mattress was that broken and lumpy last year that to keep it straight i had to put my dictionary under it and I rang up residential services 3 times and it didn't get fixed, they did repair my lamp and my desk chair though to be fair. The kitchen wasn't in good condition and the taps leaked all year which was a bit irritating, when we moved in half the kitchen cupboards were off because they had been doing work and hadn't fixed it in time for the new students to come in and it took them a couple of weeks to fix that.

All in all I would say its probably better to live somewhere else. It does have good features - cleaners (although they don't clean very well), internet connection (very very useful) and if you don't have a computer its very near the 24hr computer room in Mappin Street, and telephone in the bedroom but its overpriced for what you get and I certainly wouldn't live there again.

possibly, if it is it's probably all the disgruntled steel workers, but its pretty safe as far as cities go, the uni isn't really near the red light district, (theres a road that sort of draws the line)
safest city in the uk you know.

It's definatly safer than bristol whi ch is all i really have to compare it too.

There are tons near the union. Down the back of broadlane and the roads behind it. I have also seen prostitutes on the corners of mappin street at weekends sometimes.

Which is nicer, best location, etc?

Cresent Flats.

Endcliffe Student Village is a hive of everything studenty - and I'd personally choose to be in amongst the students and the Student Kingdom that is Broomhill.

BLC is closer to the town and to the academic buildings, however you are away from the student feel at night.

I stayed in Cresent Flats in my first year, and it's perfectly adequate for a year. There is a student feel, and plenty of chances to meet others.

Endcliffe Bar is located in Earnshaw Hall, and is cheap, and has a big screen.

Something I particularly loved about the Endcliffe site, was the greenery; squirrels and foxes can be seen often around the flats, and it sits on one side of a massive green area that is often used for Barbeques or Football matches - (does involve using Roadcones/road signs etc).

Facilities inside the flats are fine; rooms are of a decent enough size, and the cleaning is done weekly - thats the hoovering, and wiping of the surfaces - NOT doing your pots, and they only hoover the area they can see!

Good to see you going self-catered anyway; sets you up better for the second year and the thrills of living in Crookes, Walkley, or Hunters Bar !

How likely is it that you will be given a place in Cresent Flats? Or is there an over-demand?

There's 130 places in Cresent.

It was my first choice last year - and I got it no problem.

Make sure that as soon as you get your housing form that you return it as soon as possible.

If you get Room 6, Flat 8, then the burn marks on the carpet as you go through the door were down to my flat mates trying to smoke me out with incense sticks. :p:. Instead they just burnt the floor.

Is this for Eng lit or eng/sociology?

I might be seeing you next year!

The important question to ask when considering any accomodation in Sheffield is: How close am I to Nibbles pizza and the Broomhill Friary?

In this case, Crescent Flats wins hands down.

I actually went all the way to the library yesterday at 11pm just to get some chocolate form the vending machine as the house is completely devoid of sweets and biccies. Stupid me for forgetting Alldays.
