MA Creative Writing Online - Hull or Teesside

Hi,
I am looking to study an MA Creative Writing at either Teesside or Hull and was wondering if anyone had studied either course. The courses are distance learning so I'm not to concerned with the campus or location but more interested into how you find the course materials, facilities, and support available as a distance learning student with either institute.

Did you enjoy the course and found the modules interesting? Also, did they help you develop the skills needed to improve your writing and produce work which could be publishable. My aim is to be a novelist and while I appreciate that studying a masters isn't a guarantee of achieving this goal I was wondering if anyone else had studied the course and found it beneficial as a starting point for achieving this aim

.Also, if anyone could provide me with more information on what topics where covered in each module that would be great. I have read the module outlines for both courses but they appear to be rather vague and would like a more detailed breakdown. Finally, did you feel the course was good value for money and would you recommend it to others.

Kind regards
Claire

Hi Claire, did you make a decision? Only just joined this website and notice you posted 2 years ago. I'm hoping to complete the MA distance learning with Teeside.

Hi Paula,
Sorry for not replying sooner, I've just seen your message.
Yes, I did my decision and decided to apply for the distance learning MA with Teesside. I started last year (September 2023) and I am doing the two year part time route so have another year to go (due to start my second year shortly).

In the end, I chose Teesside for several factors, one was purely financial as the Teesside course was considerably cheaper than the Hull course but, ultimately the modules at Teesside appealed to me. I'm glad I chose Teesside as I feel that it has a really good distance learning programme. The distance learning online platform is easy to use and the tutors are helpful and supportive.

As I am doing the part time 2 year route I have only completed two modules so far, so can only provide feedback on what those modules were like but I found them helpful. The first module Core, Skills and Techniques was great for me as it allowed me to build on my writing skills and learn writing techniques, this was valuable as I came to my MA having completed an undergraduate degree which was in a different field so had little to no understanding of creative writing techniques such as how to gather ideas, finding my writing voice and really thinking about why I wanted to write and what was important to me as a writer.

The second module, Professional Writer in the World, allowed me to think about what I want to do with my writing once I have finished the MA (for me my goal is to become a published author). I found this module really beneficial and practical, as I had to think about all the steps that was involved in actually getting a book published and breaking it down it step by step processes. I'll be honest, this module took me out of my comfort zone but in a good way and really gave me the groundwork I needed to finish my novel and start the publishing process.

I've given you a little overview of the course and the modules that I have taken so far. If you want to ask me anything else, then feel free to.

Kind regards
Claire
