    You sir = maximum win.

    Finally someone else who agrees.

I find people who still like musicals as annoying as teenage girls who still obsess over Disney films.

I'm not the biggest fan of musicals but surely the sheer scale and extravagance must be at least a little impressive.

"Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...the spit-take scene is lame and the monkey motif is laboured...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?"

As always, I'd be interested to know on exactly what experience the detractors of the form are basing their views on.

Yes, but I don't consider my knitting or chutney-making to be of cultural significance/importance.

    Avenue Q.

A musical which is very not for kids, despite the puppets.

And how many kids are going to watch Miss Saigon or Les Mis?

The Music Man =/= High School Musical

Is Phantom of the Opera a musical?

Edit: This was meant as rhetorical, to make a point. I'm getting very lazy today and not putting enough effort into such posts.

I'll have some of that chutney

Just re-read the OP, I think some do carry a serious message in a subtle, 'simple' form which the masses can enjoy as a past-time, whilst the more insighted will pick out on social/cultural messages
