Hi,
I'm a 51 year old looking to apply for PGDE . I've 2 ordinary degrees ( one with distinction) , currently in my 5th year working as a primary school support assistant, level 2 forest skilled trained and have in the past have been a beaver leader, led school running club . I'm concerned that uni's will only consider applicants with a honours degree. Can anyone advise ? Thank you Lynn

Hi ,
I'm looking to apply to either UWS or Glasgow . I was keen to study to teach in catholic primary schools too but not sure if this is offered at UWS ?
I have 2 degrees and currently in my 5th year of working in a primary school as a School Support Assistant. Do you think my application would be considered even tho I don't have honours degrees ? Thank you 😊

I did the PGDE primary at UWS 2 years ago, finished my probation last year and got a permanent post so if anyone has any questions about the application process/PGDE/teaching then I'd be delighted to help!

Hello everyone,

I am applying for PGDE Secondary in either Modern Studies or History. Having been sadly unsuccessful last year I'm extra motivated this time around to make my application as strong as it can be. I'm sure this forum will be a great tool in doing that!

Do you have any idea why you were unsuccessful if you don't mind me asking? Just want to have as much of an idea as possible as to why sometimes people are sadly unsuccessful so help avoid those same issues when I apply.

Hi Lynn!
I’ve seen a few people on some other forums say they have been accepted before with an ordinary degree or know others who have, however you’re best to email the uni/s you intend to apply to in order to check with them for definite if they accept an ordinary degree.

Best of luck with your application! It sounds like you have amazing experience 😊

From the feedback I received from Unis my application and personal statement were really strong unfortunately it was my interviews in which I I fell short. I think the interviews being online was quite a hinderance and only being allotted 15 minutes doesn’t really lend itself to being able to properly articulate your points etc lol.

Hello! Unfortunately, UWS do not accept ordinary degrees but Glasgow do - it is all about your application and experience  Glasgow University actually run the Catholic Teaching Cert for all the other unis too - so this sounds like a good option for you. Good luck!

Hi everyone,

I was devastated at being rejected last year but I now currently work in a school so everything happens for a reason.

Hi!
Congrats on getting a permanent post! I'm just wondering if you could maybe shed some light on the process of securing that? I'm hearing a lot on other forums about how much of a struggle it is to get permanent posts and at the moment there's hardly any supply either. I'm Edinburgh based but have looked at MJS a few times the last few months and am seeing the odd permanent post for primary in Central Edinburgh/ neighbouring LA's - is it just that you're up against sooo many people applying?

How many posts did you apply for and when did you start looking in your probation year? What do you think have you an advantage over other candidates and is there anything you did during your probation year, in the classroom for example, that you felt might have given you the edge?
Sorry for all the questions! I'm currently in a secure job, looking to change career so the growing talk of the lack of jobs out there is a bit of a concern!
Looking forward to hearing your take on it all 😊

I asked UCAS about this and was advised to put “Uni”.

Hi everyone!

I’ve just had an email from Dundee asking for me to send over a reference to them directly. Does anyone who has applied in previous years know if any other universities do this also? Just so I can let my referee know that I might be asking them a few more times! 🙈

How is everyone feeding the CfE into their personal statements? I have pretty much written mine but I'm stuck on how to do that part!

Hey guys, hope everyone’s application are coming along well!

I’m at the point where I’m ready to send away my reference request however, my referee asked me what stuff she should include and it stumped me tbh. (TLDR: I’ve been providing lessons to frail/elderly residents in a care home once a week for these last few months and the clinical lead (nurse in charge) offered to be my ucas reference. But she doesn’t know what to include and tbh I’m not sure I know either.

What has everyone else’s referees been saying or what did you ask them to include?

Thanks in advance!!

Hey!

When you apply through UCAS as an independent applicant your referee will receive a link to complete the reference and before they do, UCAS provides a good detailed breakdown of the type of information they recommend be included in the reference. Apart from that though, I’ve heard the best stuff to include is suitability for the specific course (i.e. ability to cope with workload, suitability for working with that age group), personal skills and qualities that you have that make you suitable for teaching, work ethic, etc. That’s all I can think of just now, hopefully that helps!

Hello!

I'm Simon, I'm from outside of Glasgow, applying for a PGDE (secondary) in modern languages!
I'm applying to Strathclyde, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and UWS.
I graduated in 2019 and have been working as an English teacher in Japan since then.

I had a question if anyone can give some advice: Strathclyde says that they require two references for entry to the PGDE, however, it's only possible to have one reference UCAS. Do they ask for the second reference at a later time?

I didn't know that Strathclyde wanted two references!

Yes I guess they request a second one later on in the process, perhaps after interview? Have you scrolled through the previous years threads for the pgde to see if there is any mention of it?
