Hi, looking to apply to the PGDE in primary education next year and I was wondering if anyone received any interviews without actual classroom experience? I have lots of experience working with primary school aged children but not in a classroom setting and I don't know if it's a waste of time applying?

Any help would be great?

Hi!! I am planning on applying to do the PGDE primary education next year and was wondering if anyone managed to get the the interview stage without any class room experience. I have lots of experience working with primary school aged children but no actual class room experience, wondering if it's still worth applying?

Thank you so much for your reply, I'll continue to try but no luck so far. Can I ask what experience you did have?

Hello! I’ve sent my UCAS PGDE application to Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Strathclyde! Hoping to get in with an ordinary degree as I currently work in a school! Fingers crossed

Hello, were you able to get in with an ordinary degree?

For those who are now doing the PGDE, or applied last year, I was looking for some advice if possible.

I am 37, have had a career in sport for the past 15 years since graduating, and have also taught English as a foreign language over the years in the UK and abroad.

I am thinking of applying before 31 Jan for the Aug 2024 intake for PGDE Modern Languages.

1) How did other mature students manage? No kids, but keen to work part-time if I do the PGDE. Getting married in the Feb of what would be the PGDE year. Shouldn’t be too much distraction, I hope? Hahah

2) Are some of the classes still online? What does a typical week look like when not on placement?

3) How much workload is involved in the PGDE year? Do you have to study many evenings/weekends?

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

I'm currently studying on the PGDE primary course in Aberdeen but hopefully can offer some insight.

I am aware of quite a few people on the course that have managed to keep up a part time job during the uni sections of the course but not during placement as that ends up being very full on. I also know someone who has been planning a wedding throughout the year of the course and has been managing pretty well to do both, so I would say that it won't be a distraction if you keep organised!

For the primary course we have been completely in person apart from a few days of bad weather when we were moved online. Not too sure on the secondary course but I can't imagine they've been much different.

Workload is high and there is a LOT of paperwork during placement. I have PGDE related work most evenings and weekends, so you just have to plan in time for yourself within it all.

Good luck for your application!

Hi there,

I'm currently doing my PGDE Secondary at Glasgow and I, too, am a mature student. I'm almost 40.

I had to give up my job as I was a Support for Learning Assistant so I had no option on the job front.

The PGDE is very demanding at times, especially during placements.

Only 1 class that I have is online and that is my Becoming a Teacher lecture on Wednesdays. My timetable was CPP on Mondays 11-1, then Catholic Teachers Certificate on Tuesdays 9-1pm with some Social Studies CPP from 3-5pm, Wednesdays is online from 9-11am and RELLT is Fridays from 11-1pm . When at university, I would usually study every night except Friday evenings and weekends - unless I have an assignment due. This is at Glasgow.

In terms of placement, you will be expected to work the entire school day everyday. I usually start at 8am and leave around 4-5pm so I'm not doing lots when I get home. However, I do work at home on weeknights until 9pm but give myself Friday evening off. I also do school work at the weekends too.

Yes, the PGDE is very demanding but is totally rewarding. I've loved every moment of it so far.

Please feel free to DM me, if you have any questions etc.

Best of luck with your application!

Hi! I interviewed on 7th Feb and got an offer on the 14th, the interviews for primary are individual and last around 20 minutes. You’re either invited for a morning or afternoon session and they give you a short presentation on the course then you get assigned an interview time 😊 good luck!

Hey! How many people interviewed you? I’m super stressed about if there will be like 10 people lol
