Okay, can I just say I'm from Plymouth and have gone out many a time in Plymouth and London. Judging from my experience, Plymouth is way better considering the amount of bars and clubs within close proximity and diversity. Also, it's genrally friendlier and is alot easier on your wallet. I'm not saying London is naff at all but I still think Plymouth wins hands down. But that's my opinion.
Anyhoo, with regards to Oxford Brookes, don't do it!! I'm unaware of what course you want to study but I studied music there for a short while before dropping out. I found the uni and most of the people awful. Plus, the city, albeit beautiful with a rich heritage, is surprisingly boring, especially if you consider the nightlife. You have the SU which is a relativly large venue, a very small carling academy, one club (that I'm aware of) and the odd pub dotted around. I spent my 6 months there coming back to Plymouth every other weekend becuse I missed the nightlife and general funness so much! I really don't believe there's anywhere else in the country quite like it!

It is what you make of it. Plymouth has one of the BEST atmospheres around, lively, friendly people who are always up for something.

That guy who said London>Plymouth is not entirely correct as it is the people that make university fun not the clubs. But judging how much of an :snow::snow::snow::snow::snow::snow::snow: he was, I bet he is having the time of his life.

At the end of the day, Plymouth is awesome, if you do decide to go, you won't be disappointed.

My view (as a local) consists of mixed reviews for the nightlife of the city. There isn't much of a music scene, with only a few decent places hosting good live acts (Annabel's/Ride/Quay Club/ Jazz Cafe).

No doubt you'll find yourself down at the cesspit of Plymouth at somepoint (C103), its a quite horrid place, all sticky, draws similarities to a scout hut.

I'm all for Ride, but on certain nights. E.g. Wednesday's are £1 a pint, but this attracts an undersirable crowd, whereas on Thursday, which is often the live music night, the crowd can be quite interesting.

Don't get me started on Oceana...

Reply 26

yeah ride is alright if you are part of a club which is sponsored by them. Oceana... oh dear

I Have Lived In Plymouth For ... 17 Years!

I Cant Wait To Leave, Nightlife Is So Bad.

There Is One Club! Oceana And Its Ok On A Saturday, Normally Empty.

I Warn You Now, You Will Regret It. People Talk About Cuba, But Its So Small And Is Like A Small Pub Tbh.

You Will Have A Bad Time Fact.

maybe it's bad because you've lived here for 17 years...

I've lived here for... since September and I thought I'd be bored of it by now but I'm not and I haven't even gone up to Mutley yet so before you start ruining it for potential Fresher's, put a sock in it mate

London > Plymouth. If you disagree, you are wrong. In fact, they're not even in the same league, you can't even compare somewhere like plymouth to london city nightlife.

What are YOU on? The night life sucks near brunel?! The nightlife sucks in plymouth! Yes one club - Oceana, amazing. They have 4 in or around the london area not to mention other WORLDWIDE renound (sp) clubs and oceana isn't even a decent club, I will show you what a real club is if you really like. Just PM me. Only other club in plymouth is C103 which is a ******** in a ******** area in a ******** city. Keep neg repping me, rep means nothing to me.

My dad lives very near Brunel University and I'm afraid I have to agree with what chocolateman is saying. Although central london has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife, Brunel is right on the outskirts near Buckinghamshire and the area is totally dead at night. Uxbridge town centre is just a chav hole

That's fair enough and I wouldn't know. Never been to brunel, the fact of the matter is Plymouth has terrible nightlife. End of story. London central (EC1) rinses it, everyone knows this.

The nightlife isn't terrible in plymouth. That's a rather strong word. With such a vast difference (not good or bad) to London, it's not really worth comparing. Although it can definately be said, Plymouth nightlife is better than Oxford.

Dougie!
Get on it-
Plymouth nightlife is sick!

Youve got your normal pubs that you'll hit depending where you live (Fresher, Scholar, Cuba has a lush outside beer garden thats great in summer.. Mutley pubs for those living close, Mousetrap for us lot up the top of North Hill..)

Monday Oceana Monday
Tuesday Roundabout £1/Drink
Wednesday c103!
Thursday Cheap nights at Revs
Union is great Fri/Sat. Always that or Oceana
Sunday is like.. chillout time.

You'll always end up back on North Hill at the end of every night. Get on it-

same here

Reply 33

lol yeah always end up at cuba at about 3/4 after SU or Oceana or wherever

Reply 34

OK I'd say I'm pretty qualified to reply to this, unlike some people seem to be, considering I live in Plymouth, go to uni in Cardiff, started at Brookes Uni last year, and have been on numerous visits to others....
So, Plymouth: Revs is good fun, great drinks, but can be pretty expensive- get a loyalty card for good deals, if you get pitchers you make your money back straight away. Oceana is also a good laugh, full of chavs most of the time but can be a great night out if you're with good people. I think it's expensive, but I'm normally pretty hammered when I get there so I'm not really sure. Cheaper entry with a student card though. North Hill is good fun for after Revs or Oceana, Cuba and Firefly are the main two, but the Fresher and Scholar are fun, but depends on what you're looking for really. Blush does great cocktails. Cafe Sol on Mutley Plain does good cocktails, and Roundabout is good but apparently the place most likely to get your drink spiked.
Oxford has a pretty good nightlife too- lots of good bars, but it's a much more night-specific place, in my opinion. So, on Monday you want to go to The Bridge or Lava Ignite - personally I preferred The Bridge, if you start in Anuba you get priority entry through the back as they're linked. Wednesday is Fuzzy Ducks in the Carling Academy on Cowley Road home of lots of studenty places- good fun! Friday is good for 300 at the Regal also on Cowley, or Clems There are a lot of other fun places that I can't remember now.
Cardiff is far and away my favourite- so many fun places!! Tiger Tiger (Monday) and Oceana (Wednesday)are your main two big clubs, but there are lots of good bars too- Revs has a bar here too, which has it's main student night on Tuesdays. Welsh Club (Clwb Ifor Bach) is brilliant on Wednesday, and has 3 levels with 3 different types of music, but has its main night on Thursday, which is an electro/ dubstep/ d&b thing. There are also bars like Buffalo and Ten Feet Tall and a lot of Wetherspoons like Lloyds on Greyfriars Rd or The Gatekeeper. Finally, The Union is the biggest in Europe and is brilliant, with different things going on every night of the week!
Hopefully that gives people some idea of contrast, but to go back to the point as someone who's lived in Plymouth for ages, it's a bloody good night out.

Plymouth, as a city, is a **** hole. It's renowned for the high STI rates and "plymouth slags".
However it is possible to distance yourself from this.

Plymouth nights out can be great, i now live in Birmingham and if i'm honest i'd say plymouth is probably better.

The best thing is the variety, you have:
Union Street Roundabout end - Varsity, Revs, Walkabout etc. Very studenty, can be very good,
providing you dont value your personal space.
Union Street Octagon end Boobs, Maxines, Candy Store, C103 , C103 is the best place for dance music, so attracts some student types, other than that this area is quite rough, Put it this way i have friends scared to go down there. I on the other hand love it, more of an area for locals than students. Lots of Drugs and Prostitutes about.
Mutley More of a pub area, wetherspoons etc. Great for an evening pint, etc not so much a friday or saturday night sort of place, cheap drinks about too.
North Hill Cuba, Fire fly, Scholar - Great area, open late generally great fun! Young Crowd, Very Studenty
Barbican this is my personal favorite, generally the most classy area, as such can be expensive, tends to attract older crowd, however on bank holiday sundays nothing compares !!!! Best night/day out ive ever had was on the barbican may bank holiday, they turned the whole are into a beach, everyone was in fancy dress, the three crowns is the place to go on a bank holiday.

I've surprised myself i was planning on slagging plymouth off but i dont think ive done that , oceana is a ****ing **** hole though. Something i have noticed with plymouth is it doesnt have a student vibe so much, i mean i lived there for years and i never really ..i dont know i sort of forgot it was a uni city, i can only really remember meeting one guy ever who was at plymouth uni...
Union

i suppose a recurring theme here is pub vs. club.
If you like massive nightclubs, if gatecrasher is your idea of an amazing night then plymouth probably isnt for you.

However if on the other hand, your not a raging chav, and oceana isnt your idea of nightlife heaven, plymouth has a lot to offer.

Plymouth has, the main university of plymouth, Marjohns, PCAD, Deeb Blue sound and pennisula college of medice and dentistry.

The plymouth student union is one of the largest in the uk.

Trust me Oxford doesnt compare.

Reply 38

It's an old thread but I'd be interested in where you chose to go and I can compare Oxford with Plymouth pretty well. I grew up in Oxford and lived there until I was 20, then moved to Plymouth and have lived here ever since, but still visit friends and family in Oxford regularly.

Oxford has a land issue (The Uni owns most of the City and restricts development) which has lead to large areas in the city being pretty dead. There are a few decentish small nightclubs in the City Centre and the Cowley Road is okay for bars, but overall it's pretty quiet and most places close early.

Plymouth doesn't have much by way of decent clubs, the one's it has are pretty rough, but the bars are where most of the students hang out and they're much better than Oxford. Plymouth has better nightlife by a mile in my opinion.

I've also spent a lot of time in London over the years for one reason or another and I want to reiterate what others have said, Brunel is in the middle of a hole. London has some great nightlife, but it's very expensive, probably better for young affluent professionals than students to be honest.

I'm sure no one here is biased in any way. You know, in spite of it being the Plymouth forum.
