http://www.nhn.ou.edu/~morrison/LaTeX/index.shtml

There are download sites halfway through that webpage, and there are several tutorials. LaTex is a bit difficult to learn at first, but if you're thinking about being a mathematician, learn it now. I'll be happy to help when you need it.

I read the introduction and it said:

"The LaTeX program reads in text from a suitably prepared input file, and creates a `DVI file' which encodes information on the fonts to be used and the positioning of the characters on the printed page. "

Where can I get a LaTeX program?
And what is a suitably prepared input file?

thanks

I have downloaded it and it is working well, but there are some problems with the layout. By writing:

\sum_{r=1}^n, I would expect the r=1 to appear below the sigma sign and the n to appear directly above it. however the actually appear to the left of it as if there has been some limit on how heigh a line can possibly be:

the tutorial (http://www.maths.tcd.ie/%7Edwilkins/.../Calculus.html) says near the top how to get a sum, but when I type it and view it I get:

\documentclass[A4paper]{article}
\begin{document}
..
\end{document}

I thought it may have something to do with that, but I changed article to report and it was the same. Perhaps it's the A4paper?

It should be: $$\sum^{n}_{r=1}$$.

$[tex]$ is inline.
