I think deep down it's important to respect yourself so that it teaches you to have respect for all people, not just your father

If we're talking strictly Freud / Psychoanalytic terms, technically the most important thing would be his mothers love. Yeah. Oedipus style.

No. My dad has never motivated me to acheive anything in life, never told me to make him proud etc so I couldn't care less about his respect.
Same here. On results days it's always a pat on the back and a quiet well done, which is better than something silly like £100 per A* or your parents buying you a car for passing your driving test, in my opinion.

Although a physical reward would still be nice  (only joking :p:)

It would depend on whether or not you were brought up with traditional values. i.e. not swearing at your parents, its actually quite shocking when I see the way some of my mates speak to their parents.

personally i dont think so, me and my dad really dont get on and while at heart we are more alike then we like to admit i cant say i am overly fond of him (dont get me wrong i love my dad but i dont like him as a person). it all really dates back to my childhood and how he ignored me but gave his focus on my sisters.

so if i was pinning my life to gaining his respect i would be waiting for a long time and to be frank i wouldnt want it anyway
